How are you handling the R22 refrigerant phase out?
What are you guys doing about the phase out of R22 refrigerant? I found this direct replacement. Have any of you tried this rather than getting a new HVAC? How much does it cost per pound plus service fee? Is there some sort of service contract required?

At work, we've been hoarding it. We have a guy in the business who sells it to us as we have quite a few chillers around the facility in addition to office HVAC systems.
Last time we bought it....it was up to almost $130 per pound.

I had mine topped off when the compressor quit because it was low apparently. Was pretty pricey then and costs more now. That was with a home warranty that only covered a fixed cost per pound and I had to pay the difference. A completely rip off I should cancel the plan.

Personally, I would shotgun replace any system still running on R22 with newer technology...for the energy savings alone. I've had my inverter-based R-410A heat pump for a year now, and even ran it all of last winter (except one frigid arctic blast week week) because it was costing us half of what our Energy Star-rated baseboard hot water oil boiler would use.....

The benefits of having a newer home I guess, I was not sure what this was about!
