Hello,

Has anybody found a way to reset the iDrive back to default, specifically (RAM?) to revert the B&W audio settings back to HK without a backup. (lost on a old phone..)

I’m aware I can undo these changes by updating my iDrive software, but my car is a Pre-LCI and doesn’t have the ability to update OTA.

I am pretty new to E-sys, and I am not sure if my vehicle has a update (The VIN online shows nothing) but the car has gotten 0 updates since September 21.

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

You can use esys to vo code the modules, This will reset all the coding made. No update necessary to reset coding.
You can also use esys to update the vehicle.

AFAIK the "B&W" setting is in the G01 MGU head unit not the RAM i.e. it only changes the look of audio menu options in iDrive 7, not the actual DSP algo in the RAM.

The RAM is still applying HK DSP with Logic7 if active etc, it's just the B&W look iDrive menu puts the settings you normally adjust separately in the HK menu into a series of presets that have names. Other than that, it's HK RAM DSP same as can be adjusted with the normal HK MGU iDrive menu.

AFAIK, B&W only provide speakers to BMW, and all the integration, DSP, and amplification is Harman. Even cars with the official B&W audio option still use Harmon audio DSP routines like Logic7, QuantumLogic etc.

Very interesting. I figured the HK amp was under some type of heavy load, Ohm, power difference etc… Still, both are high end speakers. I didn’t know BMW has integrated them together, I'm guessing these are for the newest G chassis (iDrive 8?) maybe even the Pre-LCl models.
Thanks for the information!

Thanks for this, this is also what I found to be the best solution after research.

This means I would have to connect to the car, Read and activate FA, Read VCM, and then just click code on the proper ECU?

I am very techy, but new to E-Sys and a little worried when it comes to the car.

The RAM architecture was introduced to the G01 with iDrive 7 around MY20, and first appeared in the 5 Series around 2018. The RAM integrates several functions including the radio receivers, DSP, and amplification.

The HK 688 audio option, aka ALEV3, consist of the ALEV3 RAM and a separate Booster DAC/AMP. The ALEV3 booster feeds the two under seat woofers only, and the RAM takes care of the other speakers. This is very different to the ALEV4 B&W speakers option which has a different Harman Booster that drives many more channels, including discrete tweeter channels. There is no B&W speaker option from BMW for the G01.

I call bullshit here

I pulled all of the speakers out of my 2023 HK system and gave them away

They looked cheap af and didn’t sound much better

I installed a mix of BimmerTech and Focal but in hindsight would’ve gone all Focal

Personally, HK sound system has changed from the previous HK system on my 2005 330i ZHP.

IIRC the Professional and HK options had less power and was analogue from the head unit. Below is an example HK from the E60 from that era.

Just curious, do you still have the 2005 car to compare or is this from memory ?

FWIW the HK system on my 2024 M440i sounds much better than the HK system on my 2023 X3 M40i. I have no idea what the hardware differences are, if any, but the size and shape of the vehicle interior may have something to do with it.

AFAIK they both use the RAM architecture, but BMW USA still shows inaccurate info on the BMW USA build website for the G01.

The listening space shape, size, and exposed surface materials usually have a significant impact on audio, and for many, the space isn't a constant thing in a car. Even things like the pano blind and trunk cover open/closed affect this, and that's before considering the impact of adding people, filling the trunk, or options that impact interior noise levels etc.

There was a recent update to bimmercode, does anyone know if it fixes the inability to permanently disable the auto stop/start?

It doesn't because it's not a Bimmercode issue. In the LCI X3 there is no such thing. BMW removed the button for that feature so there is nothing to code in the LCI to make that happen. Just set your default drive mode to Sport Individual and set your sport/comfort options accordingly. That will keep start/stop deactivated.

Before the latest BMW software update, I was able to shut it off via bimmercode so it did work at one time. I just figured they changed something to which bimmercode could address with an update. I do use that work around currently.

I've been following this thread on the 3 series. Should be the same for us. They were able to get it coded with other apps. So to your initial question, maybe a bimmercode update will solve it. Or maybe just use other apps.

Or, when you come to a stop, pretend you got a manual and move the stick to the left... After you are out of the gate, move the stick back to the right.

There's a couple of niggles with the X3 that I'd like to change through coding - for example having the "0" position on the lights actually switch them off, and preventing the tailgate opening from the keyfob unless the car is unlocked. So I'm looking at getting started with Bimmercode.

Never used it before, so starting from scratch. Looking at the list of "supported" OBD adapters on the bimmercode site, they either seem to be unavailable, or disproportionately expensive. Even the enet/USB OBD cables they suggest are pricey (I fancy getting bimmercode for my Windows laptop, so would happily use a wired connection).

Are these really necessary? Is there any significant difference between the £50-60 USB cables suggested vs the £10-20 ones you can pick up on Amazon?
