The battery only has a four year life and will start flagging up fault codes to say TCU battery near end of life if you put a diagnostics machine on the car.
Can it just be dropped from the back with a pano roof?
Message I get is 'Emergency call system not available'.
Any tips on removing side panels?
I really don't want to pay the dealer £500 to replace the battery
G01 hasn't had to have battery replaced yet. I'd check faults first before you go replacing the battery if it actually needs a new TCU or a GPS antenna too.

Ran bimmer-tool and saw the following codes for the TCB. Not sure if the last 3 are due to the first one?

B7F343 Emergency battery: Change interval reached
B7F341 Emergency battery: Hardware faulty
3178A TCB: Functional limitation in mobile phone network
B7F34E TCB: Internal SIM card used to full capacity

The faulty TCB can cause emergency battery faults. The internal SIM fault to me personally tells me that the TCB itself is having issues. If it was a battery itself you would only have those two battery faults. I believe your TCB is damaged. I have a G05 right now with same faults. Shark fin completely missing due to poor adhesion from factory. Have to replace GPS antenna and TCB module with new battery

Just got the same issue today after washed the car, looks like the shark fin bit loose at the front section, I wonder if it’s water leak.. the system keep calling the emergency call center hang up after hang up. Lol.

Pull the antenna cover hard and see if it comes off. Then you'll know if it was leaking.

Yes, it’s loose on the front section. I got platinum extended warranty on the car because went over 60k I don’t know if it will be covered or not.

Rip it off and reseal with windshield glue. Sand down shark fin surface. Remove all glue remnants from roof. Prep with R1/R2 cleaner and reseal.

Less than a month old, and only 1700 miles, and I got the freakin’ “Emergency call system malfunction” message repeatedly this morning and evening. Happy Thanksgiving to us.

Also, Spotify wouldn’t load through the car, Sirius XM album art was showing for the previous song played, and cell reception symbol was showing basically nil the entire trip to/from our family’s house. Then coming off cruise when hitting the brakes getting ready to turn off the hwy, the front collision warning symbol (red car image) flashes - and there’s no one, absolutely no one in front of us.

freshxdough - any advice in advance of contacting the dealer? TIA

Closest dealer (where I bought it) is 1.5 hrs away. This really sucks.

Contacted dealer service advisor and explained situation. Told him my concern about the TCB2 CU / potential water infiltration due to poor seal of the shark fin.

Service advisor said they could get me a loaner for next Thurs, as they would need to diagnose. In the interim, would be the annoyance of having the malfunction error message and unavailability of certain features like cruise control. ?? I said wait, cruise control was functioning normally while getting the ongoing malfunction error message yesterday - other than getting the front collision warning light when using brakes to disengage cruise control. Hmmm, he said - might not be the TCB then - could be a "damaged cable" that's the culprit.

Regardless, I'm going to ensure that they check for water infiltration/shark fin weather seal condition and TCB2 (along with battery state) when it's in. In the interim, we'll get to putter around in a 228i x-drive loaner. Oh boy....

Edit:
Took the M40i for a drive this afternoon. Even cooler today than when I parked it last night (33 degrees). Started right up with no error messages. Spotify thru the car loaded quickly and played just fine. Did some errands and no issues, no warnings. Then last stop, Spotify failed to load. Played fine thru my phone as a workaround like last night, and still no emergency call system malfunction msgs today. Weird. We’ll see what the dealer service techs find next week.

Wondering what did you need up doing after all? I’m in the same boat now but have not to the dealer just yet. It’s like they know it’s a common thing with them and they want to hide behind BS

My appointment will be Dec 8th because i have to wait 30days to being covered by the extended warranty. I will not tell them its seems like water leak. Have them find out the issue… I really don’t want to be denied and pay out of pocket. Service advisor said, it’s a very rare issue…. Assuming they know what’s went wrong with design and assembly.

Dropped off to dealer for diagnosis / interesting loaner comparo

Dropped the new M40i off at the dealer this morning for them to look into the Emergency Call System Malfunction error message, and inability to load/connect to Spotify via iD7. Will prob be a day before I hear anything.

Interesting (maybe just to me?) loaner I got. Brand new 2023 228i x-Drive. It has the S676 Hi-Fi system, which was surprisingly not that bad on a 1.5 hr drive home. The HK system in my M40i is quite a bit better / more full sound, but I was surprised by the base and clarity of the S676 - especially when comparing with my previous A3 with base stereo - even after I'd spent $ on replacing the base speakers.

Also, the sensatec "Sport Seats" in the 228 were more comfy/better lateral hold than my M40i sensatec front seats - clearly visually different seats, even though both are called "S481 sport seat" in the VIN decoder. Both have lumbar support, although (get this!) the sensatec seats in the 228i are both driver and passenger lumbar support!?!? How's THAT for a slap in the face to X3 M40i buyers?

Multi-media screens are smaller in the 228i, but comparable features overall. The ride is not nearly as good/comfy in the 228i as in my M40i. And the sound insulation in the X3 is substantially better by comparison.

Bottom line - the engine (obviously) and ride are superior in the X3 M40i, of course lots more room too. But I was pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable it was to drive the 228i. xDrive worked well in the compact snow/ice we have on roads over here presently, as well (same Cinturato P7 tires as my M40i).

I'll report back when I hear back from the SA on my electronics issue(s). In the meantime, not a bad loaner.

P.S. The heated steering wheel (slimmer than the M40i) did not get nearly as warm, but I'll take it in 10 degree F temps on the road early this morning!

Cheers~

Yeah, I thought the same thing when I was given a 5 series sedan loaner until I got home, opened the door and felt like I was crawling out.....

My 57yo back and knees NEED the height and room of the SUV

That's funny! Since getting the X3, I am continually surprised at how far "down" I feel like I'm stepping to exit after driving - b/c it drives more like a sports sedan to me than an "SAV". My other current daily driver is my slightly lifted Ram pickup, so I shouldn't really feel this way about the X3, but it's echoed by my wife as well. She said the same thing about stepping down after driving.

Cheers (and happy Friday!)~

P.S. Back on topic - still no call from the dealership about the ECSM message - after having it a day and a half....

Does anyone know where the TCU battery is located? I’ve read that it is located in the roof of the trunk (in the 5 series and even x6). But in the X3 it doesent seem to be in the roof.

Today i opend the headliner. No sign of the white TCU box (pics attached). I could see all the way to the panoramic roof…

It's all the way toward the back of the car.

And had to call yesterday (after 4 business days with no contact) to find out where we are with the ECSM diagnosis / repair. SA said nothing has been found that would lead to the malfunction msg, and that they'd taken it all apart, checked to confirm the TCU battery is okay, found no evidence of water invasion, no damaged cables/connections. So he presumes that the msg was a one-off issue, but they are going to do a road test today and "put a few miles on it" to confirm all is well (mental images of the Ferris Bueller joy ride....). He thinks the Spotify issue may have been related to the stored ECSM code, but we shall see. I REALLY dislike when under-warranty diagnosis reveals no root cause.

Cheers~

Thanks for the reply. The picture above is made when standing at the rear of the car, behind the trunk. As you can see on the pics there no such a unit at the ceiling of my x3 (2018).

Has anyone seen the TCU in an x3?
