Anti-Dazzle Headlights

Hi All,

I know there is a separate coding thread, but I was struggling to find an answer. I live in the US, and I have a M40i that I believe has the hardware to enable anti-dazzle. Can someone point me in the right direction on how to enable?

Thank you

Do you have functional E-Sys (i.e., TokenMaster's Launcher Pro or E-SysX)?

No, but happen to get them! Is there a good guide for this?

To my knowledge, there is no publicly available tutorial for the G01 chassis. You can find tutorials for F chassis cars on the web. For example, the attached file walks you through how to code NGHB on an F15 car; see, in particular, Appendix 2. You can also find threads where people describe the general steps to code NGHB (non-glare high beams) on G chassis cars. For example:

https://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sh....php?t=1001658
https://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1578885

The general steps seem to be:
  1. Remove 5AP from FA.
  2. VO code BDC_BODY, KAFAS, and both FLM modules.
  3. Code 200+ additional FDLs in each FLM module.

The sticky point is that there is no publicly available list of the relevant FDLs that must be coded after VO coding FLM. The general recommendation is to compare US and European NCDs, where the comparison should reveal the relevant FDLs. You obviously have the US NCDs. You can create the European NCDs for your car using Coding Verification in E-Sys. I can confirm that coding verification works in E-Sys 3.27.1 and 3.33.4. I read that it does not work in other versions of the software.

I see that the PDF file I intended to attach failed to upload. For some reason, I cannot upload any files to xbimmers right now. You can find the F15 tutorial I am talking about at this URL

If you would rather have someone else do it (and code a bunch of other things) check out these guys, they did mine:

I vaguely remember someone here trying it, and coming to the conclusion that the light modules are missing some component needed to make things like the light tunnel work, and you wind up with very blurred results instead of the desired sharp cut off.

They just did my coding as well. They're incredibly great guys to work with.

What coding did you get done? Did you get the anti dazzle? Any problems that you could tell? Does it display sharp edges on the tunnel?

Here's the coding list provided to me by the codemybimmer guys:

Comfort and Convenience Features
• Windows to Close with Key Fob
• Enable Windows to Close when Doors are Open
• Enable Trunk to be Closed with Key Fob/Footwell switch
• Enable Remember A/C Compressor Off Mode
• Disable A/C when selecting Automatic Mode
• Turn off Horn on Secure Feature when Locking with Engine Running

Safety Features
• Change Speed Limit Info Sign to ECE (Circle with Red Outline)
• Enable Rear Camera Zoom
• Enable Sideview Cameras at all speeds
• Tire Pressure and Temperature Displays
• Turn off Seat Belt Reminder for Driver/Passenger
• Change Default Distance on Adaptive Cruise Control

Instrument Cluster Features
• Change to Alpina or M Vehicle Instrument Cluster Theme
• Change Sport Theme from Red to Grey

Lighting Features
• Turn off Amber Side Marker on Headlights (Disabled with Anti-Dazzle HBA Coding)
• Enable Anti-Dazzle High Beams
• Enable Variable Light Distribution
• Turn off Lights on the Off / 0 Position iDrive/Infotainment Features
• Remove Start-up and Camera Legal Disclaimers
• Change Start-up Logo to M Logo
• Enable Xvid, OCG, and Xvcd Format Codecs for USB Video
• Enable Video in Motion for DVD/USB Playback
• Remove Speedlock Restriction for Mobile Office and User Manuals
• Enable B&O DSP Setting (Harmon Kardon Systems with Logic 7 only)

Drivetrain Features
• Start car in Eco Pro, Adaptive or Sport Driving Mode
• Auto Start/Stop System – Remember Last User Setting/Memory

I had both the Anti-Dazzle High Beams and Variable Light Distribution functions coded. But they did the work early this morning and I brought the car directly to a shop to have some other mods done, so I haven't had a chance yet to check how well those new functions work.

Thanks for the info. I look forward to your feedback on the lighting changes.

As someone who's been working to try and figure this out for a long time, I am too. For older Fxx cars there are big threads and knowledge sharing, videos of results, etc.

I think Tokenmaster's hiatus and the popularity of Bimmercode that make experimentation on this level less accessible, haven't helped. The version of E-Sys Launcher Pro I used early on really did not work properly with my iStep. Newer versions work properly, thankfully.

On my car I did not seem to get distinct vertical cutoffs. I was often seeing glare above the standard headlamp line on car in front of me. I have seen it work properly on a friend's professionally coded 2018 G01. I've compared the coding on the two cars and I still get the glare with similar coding on my 2019 G02. Others who have tried, even from professional coders, have reported unsatisfactory results as well.

He no longer has that car, so it's harder for me to make comparisons now. Had I been able to, it would have been good to compare the ISTA+ test pattern with both cars side by side. Is it a coding problem? Is it a headlamp alignment problem? Did BMW start omitting hardware needed for a proper tunnel in more recent builds? Hard to say without more evidence.

As you'll find on older NGHB threads, it's tricky because people will often believe their NHGB works properly when they see their headlights doing most of the actions. You have to know what to look for to see if the tunnel is truly working properly or not. Even with my incorrect NGHB, no oncoming traffic has ever flashed me. But I'm sure cars I've followed would hate me if I left it on.

How is your Anti-Dazzle High Beams and Variable Light Distribution working? Looking forward to the feedback, appreciate!

Hey live, sorry but I can't really provide any feedback for you. I moved from the northeast to Florida at the same time I bought the X4 and (at least in the area I'm in) all the roads are wide, straight and flat. So things like anti-dazzle and variable distribution can't even be noticed down here.

. . . but the weather's nice.

Glad you're happy with your experience. My biggest reason for not paying someone is that it's not permanent. My X3 is two months old and already due for firmware update that will most likely wipe code changes. PITA to pay someone to redo - or even hassle of having them do it again for free. Much easier if I could do myself.

BimmerCode does most of the coding you list above.

I have used BimmerCode and also been trying to work with eSys. Trying to get AGHG working has been very challenging. I've spent hours going over the coding. Extra challenge as so much is in abbreviated German - of which I speak none and Google is at a loss with the abbreviations. Pooring over cheat codes for various models. So many of the options are different or missing. I don't have a Euro car handy for comparison. I will probably try some more; else just wait and hope for BimmerCode.

Also would like to get the auto lane change to work. I'll prolly try again tomorrow before throwing in the towel.

I get that. I'm having my iDrive software updated tomorrow to hopefully get Remote View and other Connected functions working, and I presume I'll lose all my coded settings. And I'm guessing that codemybimmer will charge me another $100 to get them back. But it's worth it to me. I'm a deep techy nerd but for some reason have always been put off by attempting to code-my-own. I have a guess that if I gave it a try, it'd be fun to play around with all the different settings. But somehow I just don't trust myself.

I did find some code from Simpaty listing for the G001, G011 and G030; however, my car does not have the settings he lists for FML coding.. trying to use his cheat fails.

So.. No; at least not for code that matches my MY2020.

They charge $50 to recode if settings are wiped from a dealer visit.

Honestly; it hasn't been this hard in my other cars (previously owned Audis and a 2008 BMW M Roadster). eSys is complex - much like working with the Windows registry on a computer and, as I mentioned, the abbreviated German makes it even more cryptic. If your a tech guy with a working knowledge of how to edit the Windows registry; you have a decent grasp of what's required to use eSys - and also the understanding of what a chaotic mess it can seem to be.

BimmerCode really is a cool option. I think djrobx is correct that the popularity and ease of BimmerCode has hurt the coding market. It's an easy alternative that hit's 80-90% of coding feature people want and takes much of the drive out of the DIY side.
