X3 lane departure warning malfunction, please help!

Hi,

New to this forum. Bought an X3 in August. Noted the lane departure warning light on many times on the road even I do not cross a line on brand new pavement highway. There is NO buzz or vibration from the steering wheel.

I went to the dealer three times. They gave me stupid answers like "German has better road condition", "BMW has adjusted the vibration to the minimum level". That means I am not protected by the safety feature.

I wonder if other drivers experience the same problem? If they insist there is no problem, what else I can do to have them fix it? Like, call customer service or regional service center?

Thanks for your advices.

What does the warning light look like? I thought the warning *was* the vibration, I don't ever recall seeing any visual indicator.

There is no "warning light" so I am not sure what you think you're seeing. The vibration is the only warning.

You will see a green light that tells you when the system is able to detect lane markings. That just means it is able to detect the lane markings. From there, if you depart from the lane without signaling, you will get the steering wheel vibration. If you signal first, there will be no vibration. If the green light is not on, then no lanes are detected and you won't get warnings at all.

There are settings in iDrive to control the intensity of the vibration, as well as how frequent the warnings are. Settings are "always", "reduced", "off".

All of this is covered in the owner's manual, so take a look at that.

I thought this might be the case as well. I didn't want to assume it was the green indicator though. A dealer should know that if they spent at least 5 seconds to try to actually understand the question and help.

Thanks for your advices.
Are you talking about the Lane Change Warning, the warning triangle in the external mirrors?
It will light up if there's a car in your blind spot ..

No, the lane departure warning. It is a green little light on the dash when it is ON. Totally normal and functioning correctly.

Let´s make this clear.
LDW (lane departure warning) - on/off is controlled via Intelligent Safety. When it´s on, there is a green light on on a dash AND at least one lane marking has been detected. Warnings are issued by means of steering wheel vibration.
LCW (lane change warning) - on/off is controlled via Intelligent Safety. There is no special light for on/off indication. Warning are issued by means of a light in the exterior mirror (triangle).

So... to me it´s not clear, what the OP is referring to.

thanks

Thanks for all replies.

Guess the genius do not get it right.

They said the green light is too sensitive to detect the warning. It turns out the green light is only on when the camera detects the lane mark. In my case, 50% the light is on.

I purposely cross the lane without turning signal today, I finally feel the very subtle vibration 50% of the time and only when the speed is over 40 mph.

Spent two months to talk with the dealer and genius, only one night I found the correct answers from the forum. Thank you all.

Nobody ever reads the manual nowadays, even when they have questions. I must be old fashioned, as that's the first thing I consult when I have a question about the car. BMW (Germans in general) are pretty thorough with their owner's manual and even the index is well cross-referenced. So it should be the go-to for any questions.

Agree.
Unfortunately it's not very technical .. or at least not as deep as I would like.

Hi All,

It's been quite some time since I've posted on any forums, but I did just get a 2019 G01 X3 recently and I have the same lane departure warning issue. I get the green icon on my dashboard when the system is able to detect lane markings, but I have yet to be able to intentionally get the steering wheel to vibrate. I read the manual, and I made sure that the conditions were ideal for the system to operate. I have yet to feel the system activate a single time. As a sanity check, I went to the dealer and talked with a genius, and he made sure everything was configured properly, (it was), and was baffled at my explanation. They recommended a service appointment. Now I am unsure how well my safety systems are working in general...

I've found on mine that it's response varies. I'm not sure if that is normal but I'm not bothered. It sort of seems like maybe the response is speed dependent, like on the freeway it vibrates hard and practically steers for me to get back in the lane. On city streets I just get a light vibration and just a vague sense of steering correction. Of course it does nothing if you use your turn signal.

I also have the impression the lane departure warning vibration is very hard to feel. I had my x3 in for software update and had a BMW 5-Series (2019) as a loner. The lane departure vibration was much more present. A definite difference. I'll query the dealer.

Lane Departure Warning is only activated at speed. Bimmercode allows you to set it to 55, 60 or 70 km/hr. I'm not sure what the default is.

I've generally found the vibration to be fairly soft, but still sufficient that I notice it. You can increase the strength of the vibration in the idrive settings, although others have reported that even at max, the effect can be quite subtle.

If the system appears to be having problems detecting the lines on the road or you get an alert reporting reduced safety systems, try cleaning the windshield in front of your rear view mirror where the KAFAS camera is located.

The manual is a lot nicer when you load the pdf version on a tablet, very quick to find any information.

Is the LDW standard or optional on 2020?

Not true! I read the manual for both my car and my wife's...the sad part is that we both drive 2019 X3s.

My steering wheel vibration is pretty strong, but I do set it at the "normal" level. Maybe I missed it, did the OP increase the vibration in the steering in iDrive?
