oil pan gasket leak

2012 X3 35i. Last service visit, dealer said oil pan gasket is leaking and quoted 1800. I declined. It seemed leaking 1 quart of oil every 4 month/3000 miles. At this speed, shall I take action and fix it in some local shop (quoted around 1K), or just store a backup bottle of oil in the trunk? I have done oil filtering housing gasket repair 2 years ago at $800. But oil is still leaking, and this time the oil pan gasket seems too expensive. What's the consequence of no action for the oil pan gasket leak? Thanks.

I have same year car with non-turbo (n52) motor, at 73K miles some pan gasket leakage - $1600 to repair (must support motor, drop subframe, move steering out of the way....fair amount of labor). I'm using lot less oil than you and will simply monitor going forward. I do own oil changes so I'm under the car periodically to view leakage situation.

Leakage from pan should never really be large volume unless gasket fails in very major way; little oil goes long way to make a mess on undercarriage components but is for most part harmless.

All motors burn some oil, so your consumption is attributable to 2 causes

Dealer told my friend the oil pan was leaking and wanted $1900 to fix it. We de-greased the entire engine and found the valve cover was leaking due to a crack in the cover and it leaked down onto the oil pan making the oil pan appear to be leaking. Replaced valve cover and gasket and no more leak. I've lost trust in mechanics.

That's useful information. Will check valve cover - how much would that usually cost to fix?

DIY parts cost ~$500, I would estimate ~$500 in labor.
