'18 X3 M40i

I've been driving one of these for almost a week now while my M is having surgery for a noisy valvetronic motor:

http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1389358

BMW did a really nice job on this new X3. Sure it is not a true M, but it is a blast to drive.

It does feel a little smaller/lower than past X3 (we had an 06 and an 07 years ago).

The engine pulls hard. Interior is comfortable.

One complaint is that the touch free hand gesture feature is a little quirky. Seems like a silly feature. Just push the buttons.

I'd absolutely consider this if I ever needed a smaller SUV.

Your dealer has far better loaners than mine! Had to get something done on new x3 M40i last month and was given a fully base X1 for a week, which is a huge part of their loaner fleet. Never again.

Agree with you on the gesture feature. I don’t get it at all. How do the seats compare to your F80?

I'd say the seat comfort between the two is pretty similar even tho when you compare them to each other they are different. I have taken long drives in both with no issues.

The M seats are more firm and seem to wrap around me more, while I'd say the X3 seats have more give and padding in them.

Wifey says she likes the X seats a little better. But she daily drives a Merc ...so there is that

I've grown quite fond of the gestures, in particular the "peace sign facing upward" to change the track. For some reason they have the next track button on the far right of the dash where it takes attention away from driving to find, and scrolling with hud is not as easy as just making a sign with your hand.

That said I really don't care for the volume control gesture, not accurate enough.

I like it. After a bit of practice it works great and you have less chance of losing focus on driving.

Thanks for this!

My 2018 M3 ZCP w/1500 miles also makes this noise, but didn't give much thought to it. From reading the Thread, it looks like you had this issue early on, but only now are getting it resolved, why so long? Also, where in PA are you?

I think its ingenious. I find myself trying to use the volume gesture in my truck that definitely doesn't have the feature.

I thought it was gimmicky when I first heard about it, but now am a big fan.

it actually looks like the g01 is slightly longer by 6 inches, slightly wider by 2 inches, but seems the same height both at 66"

ground clearance is reported as 8" for the 07 model year and 8" for the g01...

maybe it just feels sportier! def a fun vehicle.

Yeah I had told the dealer about it months ago. They were backed up and said it would take a couple weeks to get it in. So I waited to schedule it since it runs great ...

The noise was so on and off I sort of forgot about it for a few weeks haha ..but it is finally done.

The dealer initially had no idea what to do about the noise, but when they sent my video of the noise to someone @ BMW they were told to just replace that motor. I'm thinking not many dealers are familiar with it, but BMW is.

I'm about an hour east of Pittsburgh ..for now

sometimes when I'd pick up something from my cup holder it would change the station

guess I just needed more practice with it. cool idea..just didn't work for me.

Gotcha, thanks. Yeah, the noise is very inconsistent, and I'm in no rush to have my M undergo surgery
