Opposite - mine's much worse when coming from the driver's side.

There was once a man who wished his small, noisy house was larger and quieter. He went to the wise old woman of the town and explained his need. She said, "I can solve your problem. Just do as I say."

The man agreed.

"If you have a chicken, some sheep, a horse, and a cow," she said, "bring them into the house with you."

"That's a silly thing to do," thought the old man. But he did it anyway. Now his house was already small, and with all those animals in it, there was no room at all. He returned to the old woman and cried, "I need more room! The animals are so noisy I can't think!"

"Take all those animals out of your dwelling," she replied.

When he had put all the animals comfortably back in the barn, the man went into his house. To his amazement, it suddenly looked remarkably bigger! Without the animals inside, his house was now quiet too!

--> So the moral of this story - get some farm animals and life will be grand.

Do you drive outside? Do you ever park outside?
Being out in the sun isn't the only cause of the gasket shrinking... it just shrinks over time.
Go look at the edges, if there is any gap on either end it needs replaced.

Verdict from dealer service: nothing’s wrong.

I’m not going to insist they fix it because I can’t guarantee they won’t break something else. Just need to keep trying things on my own.

Both these comments you just made, made me smile. The latter due to the fact that you recognise the gain may introduce pain (over the past years people have become f-ups for some reason I can't explain. Age?). The former for quite the inverse ... some time back (20 years!) i had a Mercedes whereby the boot release button vibrated with the (rather cool I may add) Bose sound. Really annoying. THe dealership, after investigation, actually wrote in the report advising me not to play music loud. FFS it wasn't even that loud :-|

Sorry to hear but I'm not surprised which is why I've been dragging my feet taking it in.

I figure I have these options -

1) Ignore it, take the Q5 on trips because my wife hates the noise. Kind of makes owning the car pointless.

2) Give the dealer a crack at it, I've been waiting for the buzzy sound on the passenger side to get extremely repeatable so I can at least get that fixed.

3) Bite the bullet on acoustic glass and all the joy and misery of getting it installed.

4) Dump the car.

My plan is to try item 2, then go straight to 4 if no luck. It's just not worth it to me at this point.

In the meantime, I'll keep hoping someone here has some luck.

Before anyone asks, dumping the wife isn't an option, had the same model for 23+ years and she's a classic.

That’s frustrating and probably what they want you to do. Not question it anymore with them even though the problem still exists.

I’m contemplating acoustic glass. Last I checked it was still out of stock though.

I was also thinking about testing a thin layer of some kind of tape at the top of the window to see I could simulate a slight increase in width that might help it seal better. I believe the acoustic glass is slightly thicker, and I’ve always wondered if that has impact on the noises generated.

Dumping either the car or the wife are no-gos over here. If I dump the car I think my wife would dump me. Even for me (the only one who hears it) it's not bad enough I would sell the car over.

I'm sure that indirectly that's true. This is going to be tough to show as we're not talking about an abnormal sound like a clunk, grind, or squeak... all cars have a measure of wind noise. This is just "more".

You should taping around the window first. I found that this made no difference and I didn't get any improvement until I taped over the entire door.

We should start a spreadsheet. List your year, trim, options, build week, etc and if you have excessive wind noise.

My car (one of the earliest US 2022s with the Ms on the fender) does not exhibit what I would consider to be excessive wind noise.

I'm starting to wonder if it's truly random, or if there is some sort of pattern.

None of the experiments that I tried like in my pictures on page 1 did not work. I even tried to seal the area by the rear door where the front door closes. I keep coming back to a window issue. Possibly the glass is too thin for the rails that they ride in.

It's not a bad idea but may be confounded by our individual prior experiences w/cars: someone coming from Honda or VW may think the noise level is "normal" whereas someone coming from Mercedes, Lexus, or Genesis may think its too noisy.

Its easier for me, I'm coming from a 2019 X3 M40i without acoustic glass that was tons quieter.

I don't have an Allen wrench big enough to tackle those bolts on the striker plate, so I punted to try something easier.

I got a package of this and put strips of it on the car frame (not on the front doors) close up against the existing rubber gaskets, from the striker plates around to about the mirrors. This was done in my heated garage at about 60°F; after sticking the strips on I shut the doors and left the car overnight. So far those review complaints about the sticky tape haven't been a problem for me.

And, from my subjective perspective (which is all I care about), it seems to have helped a bit with the wind noise. It's certainly the case that the tires seem noisier now. HPH

Could it also be that the glass itself transmits more tyre/wind noise ?

That's my favorite choice, made ill-fitting by the seals, etc designed to accommodate a thicker glass. So a bit of a double whammy, thinner glass, which will definitely transmit more noise, and oversized seals because the thinner glass is riding in seals made for the acoustic glass.

Here is another SIB regarding excessive wind noise and other things that I posted a while ago. Even though this SIB is less helpful, it is still worth looking into.

My 2022 X3 30iX had pretty bad wind noise and my local dealer tried taping all the door and the window seals but the wind noise didn't reduce. I later found that there is a small gap between the driver-side door and the A-pillar. You can push the door frame (around area 2 in the pic) and feel and see it moving toward the car body. Adjusting the door sticker doesn't help. I suspect it is because the door seal (Item 2 in SIB 51 09 20) wasn't aligned properly thus creating a gap between the door frame and the A-pillar.

My 2023 X3 30iX doesn't have the gap issue, and the wind noise was significantly less than my 2022 X3 30iX, at least to my ears. I didn't have a chance to ask the dealer to replace the door seal on my 2022 X3 30iX because I traded it in due to many things wrong with the car. So I can't confirm my theory about the door seal alignment...

Drove around on the highway a bit today with everything closed and no audio so I could listen for wind noise. There’s definitely more from the driver’s window area than there was on our X1 that we traded for the X3. I’d describe it as a buffeting sound, mild enough most of the time that I wouldn’t notice it with music playing, but moderate if there’s a crosswind from that side. Is this the type of wind noise that we’re talking about here?

Guess it depends on how loud the music was playing, On mine, with no radio, if I want to converse with my passenger, or make a phone call, I definitely need to raise my voice.

Damn.. my 2022 was more like what kavatski said. But at > 60 mph and on a windy day, it could be pretty loud too.
