X3 M40i vs. M340i Wagon/Touring
I love love love my M40i, but I often find myself sad that I couldn't get the M340i Touring that they sell in the UK and Europe. Clearly, the brits on this forum made the choice to go with the SAV vs. estate. I would have loved the lower center of gravity and general hooliganism of having a fast wagon. Am I alone in my longing?

I'd love to have the wagon as well. It's a shame they won't bring it here.

I moved to the X3 M40i from an F31 340i - the F31 was fast but dull.
If I was shopping now I'd definitely look at the new M340i wagon. Spec for spec it's almost exactly the same price as the X3 M40i too. Haven't driven one yet but when I come to replace the X3 I will test drive the M340i. What I'd really like is the B3 Touring, but that's a third more money again. More actually because you can get big discounts on the M340i, no discount at all from Alpina UK.

The estate/wagons sure look sweet and are quick too. The M40i has alot more ground clearance (potholes and snow covered roads here) and the interior height also allows much taller objects to be moved in the rear hatch. Owning a summer cottage makes it more practical.

There's an M550i wagon available in Europe, as close to an M5 wagon as we're likely to get anytime soon.
Sadly not available in the UK, and i assume not in North America either.

Wagon vs M40i
I have had a 330ix Wagon for 2.5 years now after an Audi A4 Avant and A3 Sportback. I love wagons and would have bought an M340ix Wagon in a heartbeat but alas no more wagons in the US. The 330 was a compromise but it was the only game it town for wagons. I have an X3 M40i waiting to be built and am looking forward to it. They drive surprisingly great and have plenty of power for me but MAN do I wish we could get an M340i wagon here in the US! That engine in the X3 rocks but what could it do in the wagon! What a dream car that would be for me! I need the space for my bikes and dogs (retired racing greyhounds) so...the X3 M40i is it. Phytonic Blue, Executive Pkg, M Adaptive Suspension, HK sound, Full adaptive cruise control, all the goodies for sure but have to wait as the plant is closing down...production date was supposed to be 4/10. But check out the MSport Wagon with Track Handling package in the attachment...had it a week when we took this trip. Took a later trip with the dogs, the roof box AND my 29r Mountain bike on top. Awesome car though would be even better with the 6 pot engine.

That's a nice F31.
My default answer is, of course I'd take the M340i touring! But then I think about it, and I'm not so sure. Here in the land of snow I really like having the extra ground clearance. The lower front bumper of my M40i still looks great. No scrapes or anything. I can leave the driveway with 6inches of snow and not plow through the snow. Compare that to the lower front bumper of my Golf R and R32 after a few winters. Then I think about the frost heaves and ruts on the dirt roads. I can safely drive over so much more than I could previously. It's nice not having to worry as much. Same with the big sidewalls of the 19s. Of course, if I lived a bit farther south where there isn't much snow, then I'd get the touring. But where I live now the M40i is a better choice. |

Yep. In Marin County, an M340i is a great compromise though.
