Pointers for getting into an X3 M40

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hey all,

I'm looking for any tips or things to be aware of when looking at a used X3 M40.

I'm finally looking at replacing my old daily driver and would like to add a "baby M" to my garage(have an E93 for summer fun).

I test drove one the other day and it had plenty of giggle factor for me, so I know this is the way I want to go for my new daily.

I don't want to make some silly mistake and find out that a certain year or package was a lemon, so I'm reaching out on here to see if there's anything I need to watch out for?

I found a 2019 with 6k miles for $40k, which seems like a steal, but I don't know enough about these to make an informed decision.

Any advice or tips would be appreciated.

A 2019 can be tuned AFAIK. For later years the DME is locked and it gets complicated.
So, ask yourself whether you want to tune this car. But more importantly, ask your BMW dealer whether this car already has been tuned or WHETHER IT IS FLAGGED IN BMW'S SYSTEM as tuned.
The suspension were improved in 2022 AFAIK. More comfortable in newer models. A 2019 would have the iD6 vs. iD 7 after '22. Start/stop button was also re-positioned with the LCI.

I drove a '24 last night and it felt less angry(tamer) than the '18 that I first drove. I did like the start button being down on the center console, felt stealthy.

I'm not really sure if I want to tune it as it will be my daily. I did all the cool stuff to the e93 and I'm not sure how happy the wife will be with me dumping a bunch of money into a second car.

Because I'm trying to keep the price reasonable, I'm fighting between a newer model with higher miles or older with fewer. Total first world problems

First figure out your budget. Then figure out if you can find one still with warranty or a CPO. Personally, I wouldn't pay $40k for a vehicle without a warranty unless I could either repair myself anything that broke or I had money to pay for repairs.

I would go MY2020 and up as you get the TU engine but depending on build date DME would be locked after 07, wasn’t an issue for me as I have an F80 as the fun car. I have adaptive suspension so can’t comment on the non adaptive but it’s good, almost never go into sport suspension settings it’s firm enough.
Apart from that I’d just look for a good condition vehicle and find the color combo you want.

What's your actual budget? $45k gets you a low mileage 21 or older. If you want a 22 or newer with around 5-10k miles you're looking at more like $50-52k.

I was.originally hoping to keep my budget in the low $40's, but have now adjusted and am considering mid to upper $40's.

I'm hesitant to spend that much on a daily, but that's just the cheapskate in me. My last daily lasted me 9 years, so I'll likely keep this for quite a while and might as well treat myself.

I have spoken with a few dealers via email and it seems like they are firm on prices lately and don't appear open to negotiation, is this normal? Are dealers really pricing them at the "no hassle" pricing nowadays? I don't want to drive all the way down to Chicagoland thinking I can negotiate, just to be told "ah, no".

??Maybe try from an individual and avoid a dealer??

My GF has a 2021 X3 M40i - she loves it. No trouble. It really is the sweet spot for the X3's. I've had my 2024 X3Mc a month or two and love it - but value, etc. The M40i beats it. We swapped for black BMW wheels and black badges in the rear (it's alpine white) and it visually looks great. The fat 275's in rear w/ spacers - years later, still a stunning car.

She is a soccer mom type and drives it a ton. Just use common sense - low miles. One owner. Older owner, etc.

Their "no haggle pricing" probably has $5-7k profit in there for them. I've purchased two BMWs in the last 4 months and traded a vehicle in each transaction.

We purchased my wife's '22 X3MC with 15k miles for about $20k less than what it would cost to spec the same '23/'24, so I felt that was a good price. We traded a '23 Grand Cherokee L Summit 4x4 fully optioned with 21k mi. Original sticker was $69,700 and we purchased it for $62k brand new (ordered it). The BMW dealership gave us $55,500 for the trade - the highest trade offer we received. Other dealers, even Jeep dealers were between $50-$52k. Carmax was $48k & Carvana was $45k. We only pay sales tax on the difference between trade-in and new car price, so we saved ~ $3,500 in sales tax on the transaction, netting us basically $59,000 for the Jeep. I was fine with that because we had purchased it well below invoice.

The BMW dealership immediately put it on their lot for $59,995 and it was sold within a week.

For my new M2, I paid $500 over MSRP and it was technically used with 487 miles on it. I was fine with that because there were no other M2s in a 5 state radius that were optioned exactly like I wanted and I found one dealership in TN that had one inbound for $2k more. That difference would've been offset using BMW's $1,000 college grad rebate and $500 owner loyalty rebate, but they didn't have an exact date of arrival and they wouldn't give me a trade-in value on my '22 330e via email.

I shopped my 330e MSport, 31k mi to several dealers, Carmax, and Carvana. Original MSRP was $50,250 and I paid $49k using BMW's college grad rebate. My nearest BMW dealership offered me $24k Other dealerships offers ranged from $28k - $33,500. Keep in mind kbb.com trade-in value, that every dealership said they used came back with $34,500 - $36,800.

The local dealership with the M2 (60 mi away) offered me $33,500 via email, and I completed the deal via email. I saved $2,500 in sales tax, so again net to me was $36k. This dealer immediately listed my 330e for $39,985, however, I checked yesterday and they've lowered the price to $35,985. They've had the car for 4 weeks.

I had an uncle (since passed) that ran one of the largest dealership groups out West and he told me back in the day that their margin was always at least $3k on used cars. My most recent experience (have purchased 4 vehicles in the last year & half) is it seems to be at least $5k or more now, and dealerships are unwilling to negotiate.

Good luck with your search.

I found a '22 with 23,000 miles for $52k. It's spec'd with my dream combo(black on black with cf trim), but I struggle with going that high. This will sound dumb, but if it were sub $50k, I would jump in it. It's from the same dealership that said their prices are what they are. I miss the days of haggling on price.

Maybe I'll walk in with title in hand and say take it or leave it at $49.9k 🤣 The only issue is if they say kick rocks, it's a 2 hour drive home empty handed.

What would the same spec cost new & how much warranty is left (early or late '22 build)? I'm guessing it's the one at Karl Knauz BMW? Can you expand your search? My two previous vehicles before my most recent two, were both purchased out of state.

That is the one. I am willing to drive a bit to get a better deal. I live up by Green Bay Wisconsin, so we have nothing for inventory. I was that Chicago would be better because there's lots of inventory. Is there a better metro to look in other than Chicago?

I'm in Dallas but I've purchased vehicles from IA & TN in the last year. My 2 M vehicles I did find locally though (35 & 65 mi away).

Pulled the trigger on a 2021 X3 M40 with 20k miles in it. The only thing it didn't have from my wish list is cf trim. It will fit in nicely with its big brother. I'm super stoked, can't stop smiling.

Nice find! You can get the cf interior trim in Ali Express pretty inexpensively
