Drivetrain malfunction

This morning I'm driving my car and all of a sudden this message pops up. It came up twice after turning off and turning on the car again. Is this something serious or should I just ignore it?
Don't mind the dirty dashboard lol. Thanks all.

Run a fault check with Carly or some other equivalent app and also make sure it is not something stupid like your gas cap not being screwed on.

Definitely don't ignore it. Bring to dealer or check faults.

This could be the grill flaps. I've heard they are acting up and causing issues lately. Your dealer will know for sure.

I had this pop up twice so far. Both were cylinder misfires for me.

Did your car run on limp mode or any significant throttle lost?

BMW replaced my ignition coils and spark plugs afterwards and I haven't had this since then. I'm close to 18k miles.

This happen to me on my 335i within the first 2 months of ownership. I had to drive 8 miles in limp mode. It was a long slow ride, I was more concerned about someone hitting me than the car malfunction. At the time I didn’t have AAA so I was on my own. Dealer reset mapping sensor or something and it never appeared again. Still driving the car 11 yrs later.

I haven't experienced any limp mode. The car is running fine. I made an appointment to have it checked by the dealership. Let's see what they say.

Had something similar @ 2,000 miles. As usual, the message disappeared the day I took it in but I had send them the photos.

Anyway, there was a problem with the 48 Volts battery which they replaced.

If your car is stock yes be concerned like everyone said. Have the dealership review it.
If your car is not stock. Then it wont be you last time to get this.

Right on. Good luck post your outcome.

I am friendly with the DTM message. Even with 295 tires and traction completely off if I launch it too hard and all 4 tires start spinning too much I get the DTM and car goes into limp mode for a dumb reason. I cannot fool the computers that Im not crashing.

I too got that message 3 weeks of picking my M40i up. It happened while driving and within 20 seconds, I got a follow-up message telling me to pull over and as soon as I did, the car would not run again and I got a message telling me that ignition was not possible and to bring it in for service. For the first time I used BMW Assistance to tow the car. So, yes - I wouldn't ignore this message. I remember the guy at the shop telling me that the initial "drivetrain malfunction" is so frustrating because it could mean so many things. It turned out I had an electrical wiring problem.

If your car was only 2 months old then BMW Roadside Assistance would've towed it to the dealer for free. It's included with the factory warranty or CPO warranty.

BMW's limp mode is ridiculous though. I doubt people would be driving around causing serious damage if they'd made it a little less restrictive.
