We live in an era in which SUVs and minivans are far more competent than almost any performance car of yore.

This is the golden age of cars.

That said, my new M40i is parked out front. :-)
I remember having a lamborghini countach poster when I was kid and was dreaming of owning one someday. While it's a cool looking car still (to me), the x3 m40i is faster and safer while being more practical.

Meanwhile, I just recalled the old honda odyssey "respect the van" ad

What!
M40i is faster than Lamborghini countach.

I must get a M40i.

A stock 30i is faster then a 1976 Countach. If you throw bm3 on, it’ll give an 83 Countach a run for its money.
I regret not getting an m40. But, throw the bm3 on and the power to weight ratio gets pretty close to an x5 40i (for reference point) and is a bit better then f25 35i (my last car).
It ain’t no m40 (or n55 for that matter), but it does smooth out some of the regret…

I don't think this was mentioned but if BMW truly wanted me to pony up another $10k-$15k for the M40i, they could have made the seats more comfortable (w/adjustable side bolsters) and include an acoustic glass option. As of now, these creature comforts remain the same b/w the 2 engines! I'm more inclined to spend the extra on the X5 IMHO!

it's almost nonsensical to compare performance times over different decades... as the last 15 years have brought us performance numbers that were once reserved for super cars...

in the mid 2000s... a 10 second car 1/4 mile car was considered a drag car... a 12 second car was considered to be fast (i.e. tuned evo, stock 335i / m3)... today an X3 M40i does mid 12 seconds... and an M5 Cs does 10 seconds from the factory... this is before we even get into the discussion of EVs where a boring Tesla Model Y Performance does acceleration numbers of tuned Supra years ago...

Mine has adjustable bolsters. I haven't noticed the need for acoustic glass. It's plenty quiet as it is

Or at least offered the M Sport seat option.

Which model did you try as they vary across the range and time ?

I’m sure some will find any seat the worst, whilst others find them great, it’s just the human condition.

The point is, it’s good to have the option.

I test drove both.
The feeling of smooth effortless acceleration in the m40i is worth the extra money over the 30i
There’s also way less lag in the acceleration.

You don’t drive like a bat out of helll to appreciate the m40i…even normal acccerlarion just feels better than the 30i.
IMO…the B58 engine makes it feel like BMW. The 30i feels like an Audi engine.

Worst seat ever, could be useful trying to run the fuel out of an M40i on the highway without stopping!

I think all in all like others have said, it depends on your budget and what you want out of your X3 . We’ve owned 3 of them and the first one was a 2007 N52 3.0 liter six cylinder and it was a beast. It was More so on the sporty side then the luxury side. We now have a 30i now and have added a Race Chip ,I’m sure it doesn’t drive like a 40i , but with that I’m more then satisfied with how it drives.
As the saying goes - Different Strokes for Different Folks .

X3M. Though you're right, it would be nice for others to have the choice.

I dunno, that seat could run rings around BMW seats. I do like how the bottom seat cushion is flush with the center console. That car clearly holds water compared to the BMW. Butt will it wipe the competition? I’m a bit surprised that they leaked it…

I test drove 30i only.... while it's not slow by any means, it just felt heavy... I had to step on it to make it go fast (or put in sports mode). I then went to test drive the Audi Q5 and right after driving off dealer lot, I immediately liked X3s driving dynamics more.... Q5 felt slower than 30i and not as nimble.
Without testing driving the M40i, I knew that's the one to get, which I did.... it's just so effortlessly smooth in accelerating. It's worth it over 30i IMO.

I don’t understand why BMW doesn’t offer merino leather and a bidet on the X3

Driving my M40i gives me a two tiered experience:
  1. When driving routinely, it reminds me of a previous diesel car: it stays low in the RPMs, it doesn’t downshift very often, it just does its thing.
  2. When I give it throttle, it accelerates harder than my airhead did. Of course it’s not as fast as my faster Beemers, but it’s closer to that realm than any previous car of mine.

I love the M40i so far. Tuned, I find it to be close in acceleration to my 2016 N63TU 550i without a tune; neither require high RPM to hit the power, either.

Does M40i much faster than 30i?
