When I finally order my X3 I just might step up to an X3 M just to option out of the damn sunroof. I much prefer a slick top. I'd pay extra not to have a sunroof. Such a shame the X3 M40i forces the glass roof upon you.

I would have said the same thing about a sunroof deletion but after I got the pano roof for the first time I’ll never go back. Now if they had a full sheet, fixed pane of glass that would be even better. Couldn’t care less about opening the sunroof.

Now that's just outright frightening. What a headache. I doubt that the majority of the service managers around the Country would be as accommodating. Seems most would find some excuse to wiggle out of it after the first warranty replacement.

I've no doubt the pano roof looks great from inside the vehicle, but I generally keep my cars long term so wish to avoid near certain defects such as this.

Its not really an issue going forward. The seal is supposed to be held with three dabs of glue when fitted now and should stop the seal shrinking so much. Even if it does shrink takes ten minutes to change it with a set of steps.

If you put the the three dots of adhesive on this needs to be done before sliding on surely this will just smear it along it is that correct

did mine yesterday. put sunroof on tilt. then pull rubber seal from sunroof track off. keep an eye on how it comes off and how it looks so u don’t install the rubber seal upside down. then u will see how it reinstalls. make sure the seal is wedged in correcty in the grooves on top and underneath (seen if u look from inside the car while sunroof on tilt). used scissors to cut extra trim off. didnt have a ladder or stool so just open rear doors and stepped up there to do it

just start from one end and peel it back off the sunroof groove like a cheese string or banana. its just rubber so no worries about breaking anything when removing and installing. its easier to remove then installing. took me 30min without instructions

I like to share my DIY experience if it can help other to replace 54-10-5-B32-973. I just have it replaced today. It took me awhile to figure it out how to put the new seal back. Well, finally I figured and only take me few minutes to install the new seal.
  1. Just enough to push one side of the seal top/ bottom groove. Don’t need much, maybe an inch length or less.
  2. Start bending the seal around 90 degree. While it bends, push the seal to the groove at the same time. This will secure the top/bottom groove.
  3. Push the rest of the seal along until to the other side of the roof.

Note: I did found the seal was 1 to 2mm longer than expect when I almost complete the installation. However, I DID NOT cut it! Instead, I compress across the entire length seem to do the trick I didn’t use adhesive so not sure will it shrink in the future. I did not found any adhesive from the old seal anyway.

I’ve had mine replaced today under warranty. It had shrunk by about 10mm.

Booked mine in for next month to be replaced. I did the realignment procedure and it helped a lot actually - makes me think it wasn’t done from factory - but I can still hear noise above ~50kmh.

Not sure mentioned but to do realignment go into diagnostic mode and then hold down (push up) the tilt button and keep holding it. Takes about a minute or so for the blind to close and roof to open, close cycle.

This could help reduce the UV/heat/rain damage to the sunroof seal, actually you apply it to all the rubber seals on the vehicle a couple times a year. It's very quick to apply because it has a roller-ball applicator like deodorant.
