alternative to transfer case seal?

I found that my transfer case is leaking where the two halves of the case meet. I'm thinking it's been opened up before and whoever sealed it up didn't do such a great job. Before I take it in to a shop, is there any way I can fix this at home without removing the entire case? I was thinking of just applying another layer of proper sealant at the crevice where the two halves meet?

Or maybe I can just replace the fluid and see if the new fluid will seal it? I say this because somehow my engine oil leak disappeared after replacing whatever oil from the previous owner to castrol edge.
