Intermittent CarPlay connections

Apple car play from my iPhone X to my x3m comp connects about 80% of the time. The other 20 % of the time it doesn’t. Has anyone else run into this issue and any recommendations?

Mine acts the same way with my iPhone 11.

The only fix that I've found is to go into Comm -> Manage Devices -> iPhone -> Disconnect Device and then Connect Device. Usually that fixes it. (I think that's the flow - not in my car to double check).

CarPlay is so spotty it’s not even funny. It barely works for me. I just use the bmw connected drive. It’s more reiki able. Sucks cause I like to use waze in lieu of a radar detector

I have more issues when using Connected Drive with Bluetooth connection dropping in and out during a call. CarPlay is more stable from my experience.

Same here. However, restarting the phone fixes the issue.

This works for me, too.

Thanks all. I wonder if the issue is with the phone or the x3. Hopefully a future software update will fix. You pay $85k for a car and you’d think that things like this would work flawlessly.

Yes, CarPlay won't connect every single time On it's own for mine; roughly 20% of the time also; I just go to manage devices then highlight my phone then hit connect on the apple CarPlay tab...

One of the menu options lets you toggle the phone from a CarPlay connection to Bluetooth connection. I use that to switch it to BT and back again. Quicker than the disconnect reconnect thing.

Anyone know if it’s a phone issue or a bmw issue?

Not really a good answer, but it's built on technology that is known to disconnect periodically (wifi and bluetooth). Wifi should be stable but anyone who has used any kind of bluetooth device knows that it's not great. I think the underlying tech is the issue.

Maybe I’ve just been lucky then because I have plenty of other devices that work 99% of the time using both Bluetooth and WiFi. I had a M4 before this X3M and never had issues with the wireless connectivity either. Oh well.... thank all

Hopefully you’re right and I’m wrong. Maybe someone will push an update that fixes it at some point.

I've had this happen a few times. It seems to be when I get into the car while on the phone or if I start the car to warm it up and walk away with my phone

BUT, perhaps have found a solution...

1) The first few times I turned the car off at a light, opened/closed the door, and then restarted...this worked maybe 50% of the time

2) Once I unpaired and paired the phone through Bluetooth...but this is too much of a PITA to do more than once

3) This might be the quick fix, ensure that both WiFi and Bluetooth are on...then under WiFi settings connect to your car's network (it'll say "...CARPLAY" in the network name. It worked instantly today...if I run into the issue again I'll give it a shot

Seems to be both. BMW doesn’t seem to have a great CarPlay implementation and iPhone and iOS have their own bugs. After hearing about F8x owners with CarPlay complain, I didn’t feel bad about not having it and have gotten used to idrive so my key profile doesn’t even attempt CarPlay anymore and I haven’t minded.

Confirmed, I started the car today with the phone in the house. When I got may in, it didn't connect to CarPlay.

Settings > WiFi > connect to BMW CarPlay

10s fix

Thought it was just mine. The lag is awful when using crappy play. I press a music choice and up-to 15 seconds later it changes.
