it will definitely be interesting to watch what happens with Z4 M sales as this and next year progress. it's just hard to see people buying the M Coupe when the Cayman S is priced so close to it. if i personally were to get one, i'd rather fork out those $5k more that would take to option the Cayman and just get that.

head to www.porsche.com and price yourself out a cayman S

the porsche lacks Xenons, sport seats, upgrade audio.....
unless you're looking to save $$ by cutting those out the Porsche is about 10 grand more

The Cayman S doesn't get hit with the gas guzzler tax, go figure on that one?

metallic paint is 800 vs 4-5 hundred on the BMW and that's not including the special 3000 dollar colors available on the Porsche

I think most of us BMW drivers would be stunned at how barren a stripped porsche interior is.

seriously, go build one, for me the price diff was about 10 grand at a minimum to upgrade to the Cayman S, and 15 grand to upgrade to a cayman S optioned the way I'd really want it

not that I wouldn't prefer the Cayman and pay the extra for it though

well, we all know it's not just about horsepower. porsche is a porsche. there are definitely cars that can match up to it, or exceed it, in performance, handling, brand, but i don't think the Z4 M is one of those cars.

i guess we'll see. i haven't had a chance to drive either car so i can't judge but if i had a choice to make, i'd go for the Cayman. especially now that i know it's priced almost the same as the Z4.

ok, here are my comparisons. since the build-your-own feature for the Z4 M Coupe isn't available yet, i just used the one for the roadster as it's only $1,300 more expensive than the coupe. i just assume they're going to have very similar, if not the same options offered. i have to tell you, if it came this close to $60k, i'd seriously not hesitate spending $5k more for the cayman. but i'm starting to repeat myself...

I'm very impressed with your self control at the Porsche builder!!

I always end up tacking on the upgrade audio (a grand), PASM (2 grand), 19" wheels (another 1500-2000), sometimes the sport chrono (another grand), sport seats (another grand), auto climate control (500 bucks), sometimes the sports shifter as well (700 bucks), wheel spacers (another 500)

I again admire your frugalness with the porsche builder! (damn those options are expensive over there!)

yeah, i would probably contemplate on getting a better audio system, but i would first have to hear the stock one. other than that, i'd be more than happy with the options that i've selected. i could probably also live without the metallic paint. black looks nice, so does red and yellow. i don't know, i'd have to see them in person.

but shit, $700 just for a shifter is really crazy!

my buddies boxster has the 700 shifter (dealer screwed up his order, and accidentally included it, so it was free to him)

the throw is so short it's half of the E90's throw (1st to 2nd is the same length as 1st to neutral in our E90's)

how does boxter perform compared to other models you drove? i've never driven any porsche so i have no idea how they feel. does boxter feel cheap compared to others?

if the boxster feels cheap compared to the others I don't want to drive the others

I'd say the boxster is the best handling most sporting machine I've ever driven. My buddies brother (everyone loves 3rd hand stories) has a 997 carrera S and when it was in for service he got a 987 boxster as a loaner and had nothing but praise for it.

people who say the boxster is a "baby" or not a real porsche need to take one out for a spin. In some ways the boxster is superior to the 911 due to being mid engine rather than rear engine.

The cars use basically the same interior so that's not a big difference either.

I love the boxster, but after having a Z4 I'm holding out for my next toy to be a Cayman (debadged, I hate that name) or a 911

why is your Z4 going to make you go for the Cayman? just trying a coupe instead of a roadster?

see, i've been misjudging the boxter as well. since it's a low-end porsche and the rear of it looks kind of weird, i've always thought it wasn't very good. but that you're saying it handles really good, i really want to test-drive one. i wonder if you can test drive them at a dealership. it's not a ford focus after all, so i don't how forthcoming SAs at porsche dealerships are when it comes to test-drives.

I'm still years away from making the jump, but I figure after a convertible for 4-5 years I'll be ready for a hardtop. Maybe I won't be ready to give up the drop top in that time, but I usually think the hardtops look better than convertibles.

Ward, you can get a pretty good deal on the 987S right now. They aren't really moving off the lot (where I am anyway). Buying a roadster during the winter yields the best deal.

i already feel this way (hardtop over convertible). i test drove a Z4 last year and i loved it. i just thought of all those things that you have to deal with with an open roof (road noise, getting sunburnt all the time, dust, stink, dirt, birdshit, etc, etc) and i completely closed that chapter and was waiting for the Z4 Coupe to come out. only i really want the M version of it. but if it comes close to $60k (with options), forget it. i'll rather wait and save for a few years more and get the Cayman.

I'm gonna take out a Cayman S for a testdrive now when the weather is getting better, as soon as they take away all the gravel! I've never tried a Z4, but I'm waiting for the coup?! Those cars are so awesome. I agree with you that the Porsche is a whole other leuege!! And Ward I know how you feel about the options with the porsches.. I want all those stuff you just mentioned!

my dad actually has a cayman, and ward was right, we got every option but the composite brakes and it was just under 72, u go get a Z4M and the one at our dealership was just under 55. If money isnt an issue its mostly if you want a convertible or not. I would think drive and performance would be almost similar, atleast not a significant difference. but i could be wrong, i have yet to drive the z4m

there's already a 987S in the garage next to my Z4, not mine but I don't think I want to be a car copycat, at least until I save up for a friggin CA bay area house down payment and move out of my buddies place. I actually got my Z4 right before the 987 was available, I prefer the Z4 to the 986 but the 987 is a fine looking car.

just wanted to chime in real quick: I hate Porsche for the way it is. Everything is an option. $59k base and it doesnt come with xenons??? Pretty soon we'll have to add in AM/FM radio as an option.

well i hate to say but look how it is on a 325i or xi for that matter. All but 3 colors are 500, xenons are option, power seats, heated seats, etc. but then again when u pay 60 grand for a car, you should get everything included.
