First attempt at launch mode with Dragy.

I purchased a 2020 X3 M in October and have really been enjoying it. My wife and kids got me a Dragy for Christmas and I've been waiting for the weather to improve a bit before trying to do some 0-60 runs. Saturday was beautiful, so I decided to give it a go, but I didn't get the results I wanted. I RTFM'd and setup M1 so I could, in theory, quickly get to launch mode. I drove the car for 9 miles to ensure the car was at proper operating temp.

First attempt:
  • Stopped on empty highway. Pressed the M1 button and pressed a second time to confirm. Ensured car was in 1st gear. Pressed the brake firmly, but never saw the checkered flag to indicate launch mode.
  • Saw a car behind me in the distance, so I didn't have time to fiddle with things. Pressed the gas to build boost, let off the brake.
  • Launch was very underwhelming, but the car did shift automatically. Ran a 4.6s 0-60. 1.95s 0-30.
  • Noticed the Auto-hold was on which may have caused the underwhelming launch.

Second attempt:
  • Stopped on empty highway. Pressed the M1 button and pressed a second time to confirm. Ensured car was in 1st gear. Pressed the brake firmly, but never saw the checkered flag to indicate launch mode.
  • Pressed gas to build boost, let off the brake. Launched hard.
  • I was expecting the car to shift automatically, but it didn't. I hit redline in 1st and bailed out of the gas before I shifted manually.
  • Ran 1.59s 0-30, 1.84s 60ft. Which I thought was pretty decent.

Just curious if any of our esteemed forum members can point to anything obvious I'm doing incorrect. Are the results from the second run more inline with what you'd expect for this car?

Here are my M1 settings:

Thanks all!

Did you step on the brake pedal as if it was going to go through the floorboard? And when you pressed on the gas, did you hit the kickdown switch?

You need to see the checkered flag... Everything else seems fine, i.e. dsc fully off, s3, and driving 9 miles...engine temp and oil temp at the middle?

Another thing, reg 4wd should give you better results once you get the checkered flag to show.

pyo Thanks for the response. Yes, I was pushing the brakes really hard. As for the gas, now that you mention it, I don't think I pushed it past the kickdown switch.

I was under the impression that the checkered flag should show when the brakes are applied. Then, you are safe to mash the accelerator. Is that not the case?

Isnt' it that same as M3/M4??

Putting it into M1 is not needed. Yeah, car should be warmed up, 6-7 miles.

1) Hold DSC for several seconds until off.
2) Drive logic to level three
3) Tranny in manual mode.

Correct me if it is different.

I'm pretty sure you need to be in 4wd, NOT 4wd sport mode. 4wd sport sends more power to the rear and the vehicle wants power to be sent to the wheels more equally for launch mode. I've launched the car after driving less than 9 miles, i'm not convinced thats actually a requirement. I think as long as your oil temp is good it will let you launch. Just make sure your pressing the brake down HARD, and make sure the gas is completely engaged too. If the checkered flags don't pop up your didn't use launch mode. It will upshift for you even though it's in manual mode if you're actually in launch mode.

If you do it correctly you won't be underwhelmed, I promise you. I've launched with three other adults in the car and it was still a riot.

In my experience, gas past the kickdown switch is the way.

Having just done one in my 2020, I was 4WD/Sport Plus/S3/DSC Off and I STOOD on the brake and gas. Checkered flag came up almost instantly.

Also worth mentioning, if you have anything in the back, it's gonna move LOL

All,

Thanks for the feedback and tips. After reading your feedback, I re-read the manual and it clearly stated it's the pressing of the throttle that engages launch mode. I'll certainly take this information and give it another go when the sun comes back out and the roads aren't so wet.

Much appreciated.

It works in any 4wd mode. The DSC needs to be completely off, engine needs to be in S+ and the steering wheel needs to be straight. Once you floor the throttle and the checkered flag comes up, wait 2-3 seconds and go.

I've launched a few times and the first time I tried, I did not get the checkered flag.

I read that you really need to stab the throttle fast and all the way down. Once I pressed the gas all the way down really fast the second time I tried, the checkered flag came up. It has worked every time since then.

Maybe you just need to press the gas down faster and harder?

Yes, based on everyone's comment I think this is the key. Stand on the brakes and mash the go pedal.

Thanks!
