Front Camera Cracked

Unfortunate to see this first thing in the morning. Somehow my front camera got cracked. It is so weird.. might have been a rock chip? Nothing else on the bumper was affected. Anyone know how the glass can be replaced? It's a lease and I don't really use the front camera too often. Thanks in advance!

I've been putting off repairing the camera.. but I took the car in to the dealership for a tire repair and got a quote from them.. It costs $1194 to replace the front camera!

Anyone know an alternative source to do the repair? I rarely use the front cam. Thx in advance!

What about your insurance company?

if it's under lease, talk to your service manager advisor. give them a nice tip and i am sure they will replace it under warranty

That’s a lot if you can’t get it done by the dealer under warranty you can look online and find the front cams for $600 or so and a few hours of learning how to installl it

Pricey. What's the breakdown - parts and labor?

I think this is the breakdown.

4-5 hours of labor.
$300 for new camera.
Sales tax.

Sounds about right.

Why don't you source used Camera on Ebay and hire indenpendent BMW repair shop.
I would say it will cost you less than that.

Damn. That's an unfortunate place for a rock to hit! I wonder if the PPF in my car covered the camera. It does the headlights and hopefully will prevent something like this from happening.

I'm surprised a cracked front camera is not under warranty.

BMW doesn't warranty damage from outside influence. If they did slide it in and try to warranty it under the radar when the part gets called back and inspected the warranty claim would be kicked and the dealer would be debited. This is no different than a cracked fog light or headlight. Not warrantable.

Buy the camera and install it yourself. You'd be surprised how easy it is to pull the bumper cover.

I don't think you even need to take the bumper off.
I believe, once you remove the kidney grill, you should have room to access the camera from there.

You're the real MVP. I took off the kidney was able to see if I can access and low and behold, there it was. Seems to be clipped on with plastic so it can come off easily. I bought part # 66537944131 from ebay and came out to be ~$120. We'll see how this goes.. will keep you guys posted!

Appreciate you guys!

Damaged due to outside influence, how can this even remotely be considered covered under warranty?

Sometimes things like these are covered. Same with your drive train and wheels/brakes.

It also depends on the relationship you have with the dealership and or sales guy..

Goodwil approval (from the service manager or dealership) and getting it covered under warranty are two different things. All I'm saying is physical damage is not covered under warranty and the claim will be kicked. If dealer chooses to goodwill the part, then that's up to them and your relationship with them but it's not covered under the new vehicle warranty.

Actually there are exceptions in relation to inherent design flaw or induced damage due to unforeseen design issues, and that is in the clauses of the warranty. For example your windscreen popping out in cold weather, exhaust cracking due to vibrations, warped rotors under certain milage....etc

The last two you said are valid warranty claims. The windshield popping out would be case by case basis and it would have to be proven that it's factory glass to even get close to covering it under TSE authorization. A rock hitting your radiator and causing a coolant leak is not covered. A rock hitting your front camera lens and cracking it is not covered. Your finger nail scratching your steering wheel is not covered.

There is a warranty part replacement policy and procedures manual for warrantable items that clearly shows Go and No Go warrantable items.
