BMW will now sell you a display key you can retrofit to your G01 X3. It does the same basic key functions but it won't remote start the car or do any remote parking.

The part number is: 66 12 8 706 874 and has a $606 MSRP plus one hour of programing.

I am looking into what else is needed to do a complete retrofit and will report back.

I saw it from another thread that the Connected App is free for only 4 years??? Is the Display key good for life?

I asked the sales at the dealer about the Connected App and he thought it was lifetime...

Been available in Canada since the G01 came out. Turned down one vehicle spec'd with it because I didn't want it. If it came in addition to two of the regular keys I would have taken it, but the fact that you'd only get one regular and then the display key was a no go for me.

It's also pretty big and its pretty slow with the swipes, etc. Also didn't want to have to charge my key.

Also note that you'll probably be charged dealer labor rates to pair this key with your car.

Like the 7 series - yup! But $600 for a key that does nothing but look good? Hard to justify that. Plus - it's HUGE.

I didn’t realise it replaces one of the normal keys! Glad I didn’t spec the technology pack!

I must be one of the few who doesn't actually mind the display key. Working in IT all us "nerds" love it and I receive interest from anybody who happens to see it.

however it is a shame it came at the cost of a normal key. 3 keys would be perfect!

But what can it do that the phone app can't? :

It's just a pointless device that takes up extra pocket room and needs charging! :

i posted this question but no one answer me yet - someone reported that the phone App is free for only 4 years in USA, could the Display key be useful for lifetime of the car? if yes, then it adds some reasoning in getting the Display key since another reported that it could be retro-fitted for US$600. It would be a third key for those who retrofit, and the cost is somewhat offset by not having to renew the App.

Any thoughts guys?

Comfort access and starting your car? ..i dont believe the app allows you to do that

if you are in the UK go to https://www.bmw-connecteddrive.co.uk....html#/cockpit from a laptop you get a list of subscribed services and the expiration dates.

Comfort access works with the standard key, and you can't start the car with the display key! :

not starting a argument but..Your initial statement is comparing the display key against the the connected app nothing about the normal key, so i will ignore the comfort access comment...the app doesnt allow for comfort access to the car.

and the statement about the display key not starting the car, your telling me if you get into your car with the display key and push the start button that it wont start, and that your connected app allows you to this?

Ive been using the display key to start the car and drive to work and home.. so unless BMW probed me with a fob i think it starts the car...

I think people need to compare the Display Key against the normal key rather then a app which can be readily updated and improved.
