Dashcam install

Hey guys, I'm looking to hardwire a dashcam to the X4. I will be using a blackvue 3500 and a power magic pro.

Does anyone have any suggestions for which fuses to tap into in the fuse box?

The car is an X4 28i with every option.

If you have suggestions for any other method please do share!

I need a 12v switched a 12v constant and a ground in the fuse box. Thank you

I have a BlackVue DR650S on my X4.

Here's what the fuse panel looks like with the 2 wires tapped in (I am using a piggy-back wire setup).

You can see the red wire and yellow wire to the piggy back on the left side and top side of the picture. When looking for live power AFTER the car has shutdown, wait at least 30 min because BMW's power management switches off things sequentially and over time.

Does the car throw any battery drain errors this way?

Also thank you!

I have a low voltage cut off device (this one here on Amazon) and it's set for 11.8V, so yes I get the "Battery Drain" message at car start up, but you can set it to 12.2V or around there and you might not get it.

The message is harmless, it's a matter of whether you can live with it or not. It disappears 10 seconds after popping up. I'd rather have my camera running longer in "parking mode" than to shut off.

Anyway, with the device, you can set it to the voltage setting you are more comfortable with.

Off hand I don't remember, but if you look at your fuse panel (and in the picture on the left) you'll see a card folded that has all the fuse positions and uses.

You are the reason I love the forums! Thank you!

Out of curiosity when you get the battery discharge error does it disable comfort access?

No, it still works fine, no issues with comfort access. Even the crappy "open trunk with foot" thing works (when it wants to).

For the owner of the Blackvue 650 model, can you comment on the usefulness of the wi-fi and remote connectivity? How does it connect? Does it create its own wifi hotspot or do you need another device to connect it to?

Also, how is the real world video quality? Do you think the price of this camera is worth it? How about the new 490 model claiming full HD?

Sorry for all of the questions, just very curious and I've been eyeballing the Blackvue products since I found them. They look very high quality.

I have the DR650GW-2CH, it's now replaced by the DR650S-2CH. The GW had overheating issues and was a bit finicky with the SD card you gave it, but once you find the right one (in my case, a high temperature tolerant Samsung), it works great. Quality is amazing (both the GW and S have basically the same quality, full HD for front, 720p for back).

Cloud and remote access is ok, I only found myself using it for the first month, now I don't really care so much unless something happens to the car. It works by acting as a client to another access point or hotspot, ie you need a cellphone or LTE gateway running in the car. I have BMW's Wi-Fi Internet in my car but you can't use that as it turns off after a while, so you really do need a phone or something to give the camera Internet access, so it's not really that convenient. All in all, not a feature I personally consider useful in my situation.

As for price, yes I think it is worth it, but more so for peace of mind and should something happen, I can show insurance if I need too (hopefully it's not my fault)

Great info, thank you... So, given your thoughts on the Wifi capabilities, would you say its better to buy the brand new 490 model which has full HD front and rear facing camera? (however no wifi capability that I noticed anyway...)

Normally I'd be all for the wifi capability, but if it doesn't work that well, I wouldn't mind not having that.

Just my opinion, but I'd go for FHD front and back if I had to chose today.

The Wi-Fi is nice to have, makes transferring files over easily but I find myself just taking the SD card out as the PC viewer is better. As for remote access, I would only see it useful for people that would have that specific need and you would need to have a purpose-built setup (ie permanent Wi-Fi access point in car setup, not the BMW Wi-Fi AP). It's nice to show off to buddies, but that's pretty much it. Plus it's not actually free (limits per month for free account).

Should be 100 and 192, the photo of the fuse panel should rotate 90 counter-clockwise to match the photo of the diagram.
