So does the South African configurator. That's what makes this so bizarre.

Can anyone get the bottom line, is there a shortage & is this a short term problem or does US get a different steering wheel...which might or might not ever be changed!!!

I’d be interested in hearing something official too, but given that the ordering guide even in May had no M sport wheel I’m not holding my breath that it will be corrected before the next model year.

Is BMW going to create separate wheels for each trim...Sport, M-Sport and M-Performance? Many things changed with F25 with early production vehicles back in 2011.

If you look at the steering wheels below, you can see they are quite similar.

(top) 2015 F25 35i M-Sport (my current X3)
(middle) 2018 G01 M40i
(bottom) 2018 G01 M40i w/ M-Sport Steering Wheel and lighting effects.

This is the interior (middle) that I optioned out for my M40i. IMO, the Aluminum Hex looks really good with the other aluminum trims parts and will have a nice visual effect with the various interior lighting accents and modes at night. The lighting will be programmable to change with who is driving and what mode you are in.

I actually prefer the Sport Wheel because it will have less silver in it and I am glad that I will not be getting those silver buttons on the control dash.

I'm with you. I prefer less silver on the wheel.

I'm also wondering and waiting on the official response from BMW USA on this issue.

On the German configuration tool the build includes the M Steering Wheel Part# S07010 however there is no mention at all on the US configuration tool.

Considering that the X3 is being produced in the US I'm hoping on this being a shortage type issue (fingers crossed).

I emailed my CA about the steering wheel situation yesterday. I haven't heard back from him yet.

Same here. Regular steering wheel won't be acceptable.

Sport Steering Wheel is for US (Canada?) builds only. The rest of the world gets the M-Sport Wheel. This may change over time but that remains to be seen depending on the steering wheel shortage. Besides, IMO, the X3 M40i should be getting the M-Performance wheel.

BMW owes USA M40i owners a free steering wheel swap when the M steering wheels are available.

Besides, M steering wheels are available on all other USA models that are optioned with the M Sport Package. So no 440i owner is being shortchanged.

I really think this is just a supply issue at start of production and will be switch over to the M-Sport wheel in time.

I can't see them not including the M-sport wheel for the life of the G01 in the US when every other M-Sport model in the US gets an M-Sport wheel.

I guess I have to call Munich tomorrow to find out what’s the issue on the M steering wheel. I wouldn’t be happy driving an X3 M with a sport steering wheel...

Are you in Germany and ordering from there? If so, your X3 M40i will come with an M-Sport Wheel.

I think the US will eventually get the M Sport wheel. The question is whether they will just cut over randomly as they get inventory or if they will wait for 2018.5 or whenever they update the official ordering guide.

My bet would be on the latter, as they seem fairly organized in having the “sport steering wheel” in the ordering guide (even going back to May), on our orders, and on the build site. I don’t imagine there being a case where your order sheet says 255 sport steering and you ending up with the M Sport wheel just because they got inventory.

Sport Steering Wheel then. This is all based on what the order sheet says.

Same in Switzerland (and other part of Europe I believe).

This picture is taken from the Swiss website about the M40i:
