M Sport Steering shortage?

Got a call from CA informing that there's a shortage of M Sport steering and they are putting a different one on my vehicle (M40i). He called to check if I'd be okay with that and he has no idea what the delay would be if I want to wait for the M Sport steering.
I am waiting for him to send me some picture of the steering wheel.

Anyone else got the same issue?

That’s funny because my CA was telling me a few weeks ago about a time when they ran out of steering wheels on the 5 series (I think) and everyone got sport wheels.

I haven’t heard anything yet, but I’m out in week 44. What week are you?

It's strange, on the ordering and pricing guide, there's no mention of an M Sport Steering wheel. The default wheel on both the 30i and M40i is option 255, the Sport Steering wheel, with it switching to option 248 if you want the heated version.

But the X3s at Frankfurt definitely had M Sport branded steering wheels.

This is very strange. I didn't even notice it until now but the M40i on the US configurator doesn't show the M-Sport steering wheel.

I won't place an order until that wheel is available.

Interesting because under "Standard Features" off the BMW website it clearly says under:

Instrumentation and controls

• 3-spoke leather-wrapped multi-function M sport steering wheel with controls for audio system, cruise control, and Bluetooth® wireless communication for hands-free mobile phone

WTF is happening lol.

Sort of seems like it was never an option for the US spec and perhaps the website is wrong in the one place that mentions it. It isn’t on the official ordering guide or the build system on the website.

Unfortunately, that seems to be the case, the first batch of M40is (at least in the US) won't have the Msport steering wheel. ETA is unknown.

The early crowd has to either abandon their production number or live with the sport steering.

I am going with the sport steering (wk44) - at least it's been upgraded since my '14 3ers sport steering. Plus, based on the pictures alone, I prefer the old 3 spoke msport than the new one.

I am PW44 regardless, but I'm pretty adamant about the sport steering wheel. It's the part you touch the most! And my last 3 BMWs have either been the (real) M steering wheel, or M-sport. Cannot go back to regular.

I'd rather not wait an unknown amount of time, hoping it becomes available. It's not a huge issue to me, however, and I'm also not hesitant to swap the wheel myself later if I decide I prefer the M Sport and it becomes available.

So I believe the M Sport Steering Wheel should be option 710 since the other steering wheel options are the same as the F25/F26.

The review vehicles all show the M40i with an M Sport Steering Wheel though, I'm going to be very disappointed if it doesn't show up with one.

I wonder if this is a US only thing? If so it's like the full digital display in the G30 5 series. That wasn't available at launch for US cars either.

How’s this for confusion.... I talked to my CA briefly and he said the issue is that US spec is NOT supposed to get MSport wheels (per the ordering guide), but they are out of standard sport wheels and are putting MSports on instead. The opposite of OP! Anyone else get a story?

That sounds rather odd, and maybe not so credible.

And now I’m starting to get a bit worried that I won’t be able to get the right wheel

Yeah, I asked for verification. I’m curious though, there are about a dozen or so of us here who have preordered, can anyone find M Sport steering on their order sheet? Or on the options list they were given? I can’t, just “255 sport leather steering wheel”.

My original order sheet from september had the Msport steering wheel listed. My updated order sheet (adding adaptive suspension) had sport steering, which I didn't notice until the conversation with my CA.

Good to know. What is the option number, if you still have the printout? I’ve been trying to find it on the ordering guide going back to May 30th and haven’t been able to find a reference.

Yes, my original VIR also showed 710 for M-sport wheel. But I made a change last month, and the updated VIR only shows 255 for sport steering wheel. I asked my CA to hold the order until this gets sorted out.

We also have the '255 Sport leather steering wheel' on our order sheet. Not a problem for us, as it seems our X-line 2012 X3 35i has this similar Sport wheel, and our 2015 MSport line has the M Sport steering (if that is the same as being discussed), and we like them both.

This is ridiculous. They should be installing M steering wheels on the M40i's at no cost to the customer when they become available.

Interestingly, the German configurator still shows the M-sport steering wheel for the M40i.
