So this is the "new design language" that BWW kept talking about for last few years? I'm not sure about the community but I believe the headlights already need a facelift.. the current models from BMW have much better looking headlights, No comment on rear end.

Make the best of it until BMW makes better cars again ?
In the meantime in definitely not complaining. An M Motor option would be so nice tho in a GC Wagon or SAV )

Hmm it's lines remind me more of the first generation than the current generation - not good or bad. Also, at first glace something about the tail lights doesn't look right. I'll reserve final judgement until seeing it in person.

X Stretched. 5 doors but flatter than an X
Lower. More nimble.

Agreed. The headlight don't meet the grills. They should - it looks more modern that way.

Terrible headlights, almost pre-facelift 1-Series ugly. Same with the rear, what's up with all these super huge lights? I thought the new "language" was sleek, thin light, LED bodies front and rear. This design looks like it may have been frozen sometime between 2011-2013! Very disappointing.
Interior is an upgrade but still nothing special. BMW has lots of work to do in their future designs. They are way behind MB even Audi and Volvo now. What BMW is really desirable in the current line-up? The 6 Series Coupe/GC only and even this is dead now! We had the 8-Series Concept that was/is such a promising design then we got the abomination that is the 6er GT and then this bland, almost ugly new X3 bringing us back to earth. Not the the new direction we had hoped for unfortunately, imo. Not looking good for the future. Seriously, who the hell signs off these things? |

It is by no means a bad vehicle overall, but some design solutions do make us wonder WHY. Why do headlights on fresh models (6GT and this X3) have such a busy shape? All the design language is much softer than is was say 5 years ago. Scott26 said it is going to become more angular, but it has gone in an opposite direction and all the fresh models are almost 90's times biodesign-round. Right now we have BMW showing us some TOO MUCH ahead-of-their-time concepts, but very predictable and lazy-designed actual cars.
The moment F30 came out i just said WOW, i have never seen this before, both exterior and interior wise. It seemed obvious that it was a trend and every single BMW will become more angular and should use «layered» interior, but NOT A SINGLE vehicle came close to F30 in angularity aspect. I guess its time to face the truth — BMW is making safe moves in 2017. It is totally understandable as their head of design is a new person to a company, but.. BMW, if you are reading, please make G20 just right: — G30 elements inside (steering wheel, semi-LED tacho/speedometer, radio/clima, gear selector, idrive screen and controls, SEATS, and other little things), they are truly awesome. — A BOLD angular exterior. Please do not make head- and tail-lights and kidney grills bigger, make it smaller. Scott26 actually gave us a hint on this, pls no safe moves, no smaller G30 face, people do not buy 3-er for luxury, its lacking it anyway. Make it sporty and aggressive. — Interior-wise, lets just hope you can keep the right balance. I personally think that the best way is to keep the G30 (and X3) furniture but a bit more brave and bold dash design. The F30 was a pioneer of a layered interior architechture, lets hope the G20 will be a pioneer of a new design language. Last edited by glukhanko; 06-24-2017 at 06:04 PM.. |

Sales figures will bear out whether the base that desires the X3 remains and grows. I suspect they will. Design preferences are so personalized that it seems a prudent move by BMW to tread lightly on a(n) SAV model which is, by all accounts, selling well. They have undoubtedly hit some major points of concern regarding the previous versions - interior cabin quality, performance (including brakes), and user functionality.
This iteration fits perfectly into what we need in an SAV, but admittedly our concern is less about the finer points of exterior design which more learned, discerning tastes pick up on. And quite the opposite actually, for angular and boisterous design elements would probably chase us away for what this vehicle is meant to do (for us). Mnfrs undoubtedly have data on the characteristics of the population which will most likely purchase a model in their line-up. It could possibly be argued that many interested in SAVs may have concerns less centered on external design, and more interested in cargo loading and the other elements as listed above which make a luxury SAV an ideal fit for their family, when compared to those shopping for a sedan or coupe. Personally, we desire performance, fine engineering, a luxury cabin environment equal to the price point (which has been lacking in past generations), a well-proportioned presentation which pleases our eye (this does, and even the base 2nd gen and LCI did), excellent cargo-carrying capacity, and a dependable vehicle. The divergent interests represented even in this small sample size of opinions illustrates the difficulty which Designers (and Mnfrs) face in pleasing all. We have already chosen our options for our X3 M40i (at least as the Draft allows) and look forward to placing our order when sales commence. |

I agree. This the M trim. The other trims will be less aggressive in the front for those who think this is too busy.

Same sausage, different length.
But those kidneys are getting ridiculously huge and ruin an otherwise nice front end :/
