How many miles before launch control

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hello all,

Just did my break in service a few days ago. In the docs linked on this forum it says not to use launch control until 3K miles. However the tech said I can use it now. I know lots of people use it beforehand but it's odd that the information is conflicting. Has anyone waited till the 3K mark ?

Thanks

Nope. Done it at 500 miles.

You can LC out of the dealership if your car is warm enough

Thanks for the responses. Do you guys build boost for a certain amount of time or just let go once it hits target RPM?

Per the manual...

Within 3 seconds, release the brake. The vehicle accelerates....

I suggest waiting around 2-3 seconds to build boost.

I believe one of the users on here made a graph that shows the amount of boost built over time for an LC. I believe 3 seconds was the sweet spot because it hit full boost, and it was just before the brakes gave way from the engine torque.

I don't have an X3 M (yet), but from what I've gathered, LC is tricky to time just right. Hold the gas too short, and not enough boost; Hold it too long and brakes give out. As others have stated, the part where this beast really shines is in rolling acceleration, not the 0-60 sprint.

Hope you're enjoying your beautiful ride!

Launch control is available from mile 1, the run in service no longer unlocks LC. I'd suggest waiting until after the Run in service though...

If you ask me, the manual is quite clear - "Do not use Launch Control when running in"

when running in ends is a bit grey though. i tried it today at 1400m. Due to the auto box.....nothing to write home about!

Manual states after break in service. So 1200 miles if thats when you had it done. Personally I would wait until then. But you can do use LC whenever youd like. Like some said out the dealer lot. Launch that sumbich.
Although I did hear that LC gets a slower 0-60 time than just a simple brake boost.

I'm still going to wait until I'm at 3,100 miles before I start using this. Better to be safe than sorry. Right?

I love the internet. Haha. Btw, launch control works in the wet too. It can be sketch, but that’s the point I guess.

Suspect he’s just planning on following M’s formal recs, which do make it clear that LC shouldn’t be done before break-in period is completed (which they define as 3,100 miles/5,000 km). Confusion comes up over the 1,200 mile ‘drive-in checkup’ as they call it, which they infer is not the end of ‘break-in’. Some of this was covered in his original thread back in May 2021: https://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1822960

It is possible to LC right out of the box, so comes down to personal preference whether to follow M’s recs or not (I'm not advocating for or against, just sharing what they state)...

If you guys saw my current garage queen, then you would clearly see that I'm not joking around in any regard. I've had 4 X3 MC's in about 2-3 years. So I may know very well what I'm talking about. I bought one that had been a touch abused in the first 1,200 miles. Even the for sale photos showed that launch control had been configured to their M2 buttons. Therefore it had been launched often both pre & post breaki-in period had been reached. Let's just say, that transmission (even in LC mode) was performing & acting like a hurt drivetrain. During LC it was short shifting & doing all sorts of non-normal things...

^^^ Hence the reason I brought this thread back up from the dead fellas. X3 M's are no joke guys!

my x3m is unlocked for top end speed, thank goodness for that, have the m package, went past 250 t0 270, think top is 280.

did launch control in my car and a 911 turbo s and 911 4s, they all felt similar and had the same feeling of wanting to pass out, it's a bit of a rush, don't do it often as it is hard on the car.
