Don't know where to ask this question
Do I need to have my skype (for instance) on my profile here in order to receive PMs or are PMs received on this website?
Also can I receive notifications when I get a reply to one of my posts? Just joined the forum, trying to help out a friend with a map update while not knowing what I'm doing. |

Yes, it's pretty easy. You can get new maps from third party sources in two ways - you can get files sent to you that you can download to a thumb drive or you can have a completed thumb drive sent to you. I always do the file download, which costs somewhere around $55 and comes with the code you need to enter. You plug the thumb drive in and follow the instructions and take a half hour drive while it downloads.
What I just said applies to North American maps. Whether the same source have Europe I cannot say. |

Replaced the 6.5 year old battery this weekend with a Genuine BMW 105ah. Registered with Bimmerlink and Vgate iCar Wifi adapter. The Bimmerlink website says that adapter is no longer supported, but I gambled and purchased the app anyway.
I did a dumb thing after I pulled the old battery out. I shut the hatch. I tried to find a manual release for it on YouTube, but couldn't. Wound up having to go in through the back door and lug that sucker over the folded seat. Fun times. It was about 8 hours between when I pulled the old battery and when I put the new one in and I was surprised that all settings and coding were still there. |

Replaced my battery with a BMW battery from the dealer. Was getting a bunch of random codes regarding the car being unable to communicate with idrive, dme, head unit, etc... and a code regarding battery voltage being too low. New battery and got it registered and no codes have come back.
Car drives great. But my old battery was a bmw battery as well and had CCA of 950 and the new one from the dealer has a CCA of 850. Battery is slightly smaller too. I gave the dealer my vin and was told this is the only battery available from BMW. Oh well. |

The 8.8 inch LCD panel on my CID started exhibiting serious problems on December 24th. I could see that the graphics processor was working and all the menus were present just next to nothing was legible. After reviewing BMW new part costs (LOL) and looking for used display assemblies that matched my part number ($350-400 USD) I came across a single post talking about being able to order just the LCD panel and replacing it. I will be writing up a proper DIY for this, but for $88 USD plus $46 for 5-7 day shipping via FedEx from China, I had the exact Sharp manufactured panel and without the scratches and failing anti-glare coating of the display I did have. The toughest part of the replacement was unplugging the pink/purple cable.
This was an incredibly satisfying DIY repair. Last edited by TylerDZHP; 01-10-2022 at 10:45 PM.. |

9 years old / 77,000 km on original battery - finally showing that it’s no longer charging despite being plugged into the Noco charger overnight (only showed 58% state of charge on Bimmerlink next morning) and continued to show errors.
Replaced with Motomaster Eliminator AGM with the large 105ah capacity and 5 year warranty - about $400 CAD after core return. This thing is a beast. I had trouble removing the large clip and broke some of those red tabs in the bitter cold but rest was straight forward. |

So a very awful metallic rattle when the car is rolling in reverse emanating somewhere up front… turned out to be a rusted through brake dust shield on the front passenger side. Had that one removed and the noise is gone.
Do I need the dust shield replaced at $100 a pop? |

Wonder if you could get one from a junk yard, or ebay? Still, to get it on you have to probably remove everything including the rotor to get to those little bolts.
I'd probably replace it but not sweat it if I didn't have time. It must have a purpose...? Brake heat shielded from the car? Something about airflow to the brakes? Maybe keeping the area clean in general i.e. small rocks and crap out of the brakes? Not sure exactly. |

My 2015 X3 finally got new brakes - this side of 50k miles. Front and rear pads and rotors. Stock parts, or stock equivalent anyhow from FCP, another good experience with them.
I had a dash warning for pad thickness, but figured it was a time or mileage based thing since my pads looked pretty thick. Well, the outers were but not the inners. So indeed the sensor had worn and triggered the message. It was winter so I ignored it, I knew I could get a few more miles and do the job when it wasn't so cold. Finally did that, and when I went to reset the warning, it kept popping up again. Finally figured out that after the front sensor wore through, not but 1,000 miles later so had the rear sensor! So of course after doing the front, I ordered more parts and did the rear as well. Not a tough job if you've ever done it on other cars. Or even if it's a first time, it doesn't take much for tools or knowledge. Carly came in handy for retracting the electric parking brake. |

Yep! Did that as well. Agreed, also pretty easy. This stuff plus thigns like no disclaimer on the screen, no seat belt gong (I wear them and don't need to be reminded), and other littls tuff it's a pretty sweet program.

Bought and installed a brand new OEM exhaust tip, the old one had some weird discolouration that was bothering me for some time.
Super easy to install. |
