Unless having an 18" diameter allows you to find a narrower tread winter tire that still meets load requirements. Narrower is superior for winter on snow/ice. Also, they tend to cost less.
If you live in the Arctic and are driving through deep snow all winter yes, but for normal Winter Road use wider is better.

If by that, you mean the frequency of clear/dry conditions even in winter, that is true. However, on snow and ice, even if not deep, a narrower tire results in more psi downforce and improved traction. It depends which condition one wishes to compromise. My preference in winter is to sacrifice dry performance to ensure best stopping/turning on snow/ice.

The Autec Kitano's are a great option.
Thanks mate, was going to message you to remind me what you had.
Where did you get them from? As struggling to justify £2300+ for the OEM ones, and even the used on ebay coming in at £1800+ shipping pretty much.

What tyres did you choose?

Ok i got small chat with dealer today, i ask them about just tires for my car 20" , and they don't have, but offer me wheels with tires 18" witmichelins winter tires for 2500$, when I told them i got Pirelli scorpion for 1200$ and i need just change tires in dealer, they told me it is not good idea go on winter on this wheels ?!?!?! Maybe I'm stupid but I don't get it....
—- is ok to just change tires on this wheels with tpms to Pirelli scorpion non rft ?????
— is any different this or any different wheels???
Help me guys im so confused, I don't have now spend 3k just for tires with wheels, it will be ok for switching just tires winter/summer?

Dealer is probably referring to the benefit of downsizing for winter to have more sidewall that will protect against rim damage from pot holes, etc.

Also his 18" package may be a narrower profile that helps cut thru the snow instead of wider that rides on top.

It is because your 20" are staggered setup. Rears are wider.
Same 20" set for winter is squared for better handling in winter. Additionally, dealer is offering 19" for protecting rim - as me predecessor mentioned above.

See post #5. My 20" staggered NRFT Conti's ran me about $1100.00 for the set, mounted and balanced. Run fine for me in Pa.

I used Mr Winter Wheels for my 430i Convertible and intend to do the same for my X3 M40i when I pick it up next month.

For the 430i, I bought 18'' Borbet wheels in alloy with Goodyear Ultra Grip Performance GEN-1 (225/45 R18 on each foot) with OEM BMW TPMS sensor valves for about £1,140. You can swap the centre caps if you prefer. Delivered well-packaged with an optional storage set (£25) which I used to wrap the summer/winter set when not in use. Did a little refurb work on each wheel after three years (£30 per corner) and sold an immaculate set with original tyres - still with plenty of tread (£400 to a relative on 'mate's rates' as they are also ideal for his 430d Gran Coupe). The Goodyear's performed perfectly in all wintry conditions (low temps, grease, heavy rain, snow etc.) and I highly recommend as an option on any vehicle - the stopping power was particularly impressive when driving on snow & ice.

For the X3 M40i, I will buy 19'' Autec wheels in black with Pirelli Sottozero 3 RFT 105V XL (245/50 R19 on each corner) and HUF TPMS sensor valves for around £1,800.

In all cases, the winter/summer sets are swapped by a local mobile fitter on the driveway for about £35 each time. I store the wheels at home in my shed. The X3 setup will get a good test on various road types, conditions & speeds next year when we drive to the Alps for a spot of skiing. Look forward to reviewing in due course.

As an aside, depending upon how the stock RFTs perform on my summer 21'' wheels (Bridgestone Alenzas, I believe), I will probably fork out for the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S non-RFTs that are fitted to the X3 M when they are due back on the car in April next year.

They are the winter wheels I have, but in silver as the black ones weren't available last winter unfortunately, but I'm thinking of getting them done in gloss black before putting them on this winter.

To get the Autec's from. Still mulling over these or OEM, but saving £500+ over OEM not to be sniffed at, and means I could spend some of that on PCW Mod 💪. But want to ensure I get wheels that don't need any hub rings etc

I priced out winter tires for the 20", they were around $1200 mounted. Going down to the 19" the tires are like $600, and a cheap set of winter rims was $700. With TPMS and tax it was $1500, so I went that route. I'd much rather have dedicated wheels for $300 more.

I have ordered 19" Orbit Grey wheels for winter (they are NOT silver as standard summer fitment from Factory).
Anxiously waiting for them to be fitted around Mid November as it is going to be cold.

Got some pics from dealer:

Very nice those orbit greys. What kind of price? Are those 19"s or 20"s?
