I went to Westmont coz they were absolutely flexible with appointments but fields and Knauz were not available (I guess I know why). Fields service rep told me he wont touch these major fluid exchanges until 100k or until something wrong with the car.

The car as of now is ready and with a bill of ~$4700. I have nothing to add besides blaming myself for not doing due diligence.
You should post a couple of reviews of the dealership on sites like Dealer Rater, Yelp, Google etc. with your experience at the dealership. It would give others a heads up of things to be aware of at Westmont, or any other dealership really, who aggressively push these overpriced services.

This! I helped out the OP over the phone on going through this. Unfortunately the stealership went ahead and did the work. I already left a google review for these clowns. The labor rates they charge are so inflated, they must have a tech that eats lead paint doing the work. $277 in labor for spark plugs and $189 in parts LOL. That shit takes like 25 minutes and the parts are only marked up 100%.

My brother previously went here for a quote, he has a X3 30i and these scumbags wanted $2,800 for brakes and the transmission service.

I did have to depend on BMW NA to step in and arbitrate with the local service department because they keep insisting the side door molding fit/finish was "normal". NOT !!!

Longer story short, would not hurt to call BMW, and they will respond and act as owner advocate, at least they did for my issue,

"Our BMW Customer Relations and Services team is here for you at 1-800-831-1117 Monday through Thursday from 9:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M. Eastern Time, and Friday from 9:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. Eastern Time."

Thanks for the call and answers. I just wrote a review on google and yelp. I was on the road so couldn't update here. I will be speaking with BMW today. Since the service is done I dont have any expectations but still want to understand.

I don't agree with blasting them after you agreed to have the work done. That's on you and not them. They're shady, for sure. But you didn't have to use them. You made a mistake and move on.

This sounds completely vague to me. Everyone over here agrees that the money charged is preposterous and so is the service schedule.
Doesn't matter what engine is in the car. No fluid from the engine goes near the gearbox, transfer case or diffs so carbon cant get in there.

So it's ok for BMW to take advantage of a customer and over charge them for service? So the mistake to trust BMW?

No, not ok for a dealership to take advantage of a customer but in this case the dealer identified the work, gave the OP their price, and sounds like the OP gave the dealer the ok to proceed. It doesn't serve any purpose to give a bad review based on pricing. Did they do shitty work? Apparently not. They charged a higher than normal rate for their work.....usually justified by the experience and professionalism of their BMW trained techs. OP learned a lesson here and sounds like he's admitting he could have handled the process differently since he approved the work at their identified prices.
I'm not defending the dealer here and as indicated by my signature have had a lot of experience with dealers and indy repair places over the years. My feeling is if you are the type that appreciates driving a BMW you should know you are going to pay higher than normal service fees if you go to a dealership for service. You need to make a decision if the extra cost vs an indy is worth it. This was a learning experience for the OP.....so he spent more money than he wanted but his vehicle is totally serviced. Trashing the dealer after the fact simply based on pricing in my opinion is not professional. Quality of work would be another issue. In today's environment, you could spend all day finding cases of ridiculous pricing for goods and services. I'd suggest to the OP taking the bill to the service manager and try to negotiate a discount (or maybe a couple free future oil changes) saying he didn't realize the total and would have eliminated some of the service if he had paid more attention. Just my opinion here. Good discussion and learning moment.

Price is not the discussion here. Its the money hungry attitude of some dealerships that will do anything to stiff you with a fat bill. A good example from the same day I was picking up my car, a guy was asked to do a 'BMW Preferred' service at 30k miles service on his 3 series. His preferred service was a transfer case fluid exchange and among others. Another one calling the technician when I asked how were my front rotors and service rep picking up the phone and said "hey this car you just serviced had rusted brakes right" 😂. Yeah I expect better from a brand like BMW and the reps of Westmont. Plus all the "BMW Knowledge" these guys are relaying is wrong. I have been corrected/provided with correct info in this very thread.

I am all for building relations. My last VW service shop in Evanston, IL was a great place. I guess they recognized customer relation better than this BMW service place I just went to.

Its a 'live and learn' moment for me. I am not dissing based on cost its based on what I said here. Using Condition based service as an excuse to make money of me thats not morally right. But I am the dummy who paid that amount. I dont think I am heading to these people for anything.

As far as keeping the car in its best running shape. Now I'll enthusiastically do it rather than delegating stuff.

This is a learn from my mistake post anyway.

I hear you. Dealers overcharging for needed service and finding ways to charge for unnecessary repairs/parts has been an issue for auto consumers for a long time. And I've had a few live and learn experiences as well. I think today's ugly economic climate is making it worse with businesses under enormous pressure to find ways to maximize profits. Multiple stories appear daily about consumers getting ripped off in all kinds of industries other than auto repair. Fortunately, I haven't had a problem with my BMW dealer about service costs but I have a good indy for my other out of warranty vehicles who will provide advice if needed before I commit to any large expenditure. Anyway, good learning post here and enjoy your (now fully serviced) M40!

There are "required" services (CBS related, oil change, brake fluid, brakes) and then "dealer recommended services" (fuel injection service, coolant flush [depends on quality of fluid], trans fluid replacement, diff fluid, transfer case fluid).

These are very different things.

When I lived in NYC, I drove 1.5hrs to an Indie shop in LI (who worked as Head Tech of Audi) to service my B8. Actually drove with 2 cars since I was leaving my A4 for a week or so to do the work. Saved me mega buck$ (like 1500-2000) so I thought it was worth it. IMHO, 1-2hrs of driving to save $hundreds is worth it. Buy all the parts online & have Indi do the labor- win/win!

Personally, I only go to dealership if I feel like spending money...if I want to save a few hundreds or thousands, I would just DIY or go for an indi shop. Service quality is another topic and everyone has different standard. Some just want the work to be done while some might want world class service.

I don't think there's right or wrong answer here, it all depends. When one has a solid financial background that $5k is just so small for he or she, then of course, he or she might just go to dealership and not caring too much about what's in the bill. Every place has specific audience and target customers in my opinion.

There is a flawed perception that bringing a car to a stealership means getting the best quality service. Wrong, wrong and wrong. You’ll always do better either DIY or with a highly-rated Indy.
