Yes. You're a godsend. Thank you sir! I really appreciate your help. It's 5&6 that I need, but you got me where I needed to go for the part numbers.

I have a cold beverage waiting for you if you visit Vegas.

Pretty easy job, though you have to take the hub bolt out and remove the axle to get the tension strut hub end out. Kind of a pita, but you just work the axle out of the way and you can get the tension strut end out, then you slide the bushing end out of the connecting box it sits in.

A couple of things and I'm hoping someone like mattsheng can tell me the part numbers for the under tray screws and plastic clip nuts that they go into. While you don't need to take the under trays off (except the very corner pieces), I was still chasing the coolant smell so I wanted to use my UV flashlight to see if I could see anything (I put dye into the coolant).

I have searched RealOEM.com and can't find these. Why am I looking for these? Well, one was missing under my car (dealer service only except work I've done at my buddy's shop and I hadn't touched the under trays) and I managed to put too many micro ugga-duggas while tightening one and stripped it out.
Did replacing these parts fix the crunch noise over bumps when cold? I’m waiting for the bmw parts since car still has warranty. I’m just hoping I’m not throwing money down the drain by replacing these.

So far so good. There was no noise over the 20 speed bumps I went over getting out of the hockey game last night via Luxor drive. So many speed bumps...

I'm heading out to run errands so I have also noticed the noise when backing up with full opposite lock on the steering. I'll do that a couple of times today and see.

Regardless, the X3 drives much better now. More direct.

@madshenriksen
Hi mate, I had the same issue on the previous G20 MY2020 and now present on the actual G02 MY2021 3.0d as well. Previously, the service replaced lots of parts on the suspension including the steering column till solved the issue with suspension arm replacement on G20. Link for the G20 noise, the same with G02 now.
https://youtube.com/shorts/3sH6QtfeWoo
Weird enough is that on my case it's always happening when I reverse to the right?! Perhaps due to my particular garage parking layout...
Last week the service replaced on warranty the right suspension arm but the noise still there, awaiting spares for the left side now :/
It is disappointing since the car developed this at less than 13000 km though.
I had to disengage the auto brake and perform lots of tests with dealer service , everything seems OK except of this noise. Thinking if one of the issues that leads into our problem is also the size of the wheels , mine 21" Individual forcing in exces our suspension in general ?! Now, I need to finish reading all the posts below to see if anyone gave a fix to this problem
Cheers

I've been trying to replace my arms since October, parts on "worldwide backorder". I have tried two different shops, but not the dealer.

I usually have this crunching noise when reverse to either direction on my '23 X4 M40i, however, it doesn't happen every single time, so it's hard to intentionally replicate the noise. For instance, I heard it last night when I am backing up to my spot but today, there's no noise...

Do y'all think it's worth a dealer visit? Personally it didn't bother me too much since it only happen occasionally, but I am just wondering if there's any safety concern.

Same on mine. May have dealer try to fix next time I’m in…

That has been my philosophy as well. However- I have pondered whether or not it’s a “faulty” part, meaning perhaps it’ll wear out earlier than expected, that will somehow rear its head RIGHT AFTER my warranty expires… hence the thought “maybe I’ll try to get them to replace sooner than later”…. Just in case. But on a “bother me” scale, it’s basically non-existent for me.

Mine was a bad thrust arm bushing. Those arms are not cheap. Have the dealer look at them under warranty.

BMW just revised the SIB and added new part numbers for the front tension strut. I don't know whether the new parts (31 10 8 854 993 and 31 10 8 854 994) are available yet, but they will probably supersede the old parts (31 10 8 854 989 and 31 10 8 854 990). Both the old and new parts are suitable for fixing the crunching noise issue though.

Hope this will fix it once and for all. Just sent mine in for the 3rd time to get the tension strut replaced (Last replacement was 7 months ago! )

These bushings usually won't fail that early lol. I guess they torqued the bushing with the suspension fully extended so the bushing would fail prematurely...

It's done at the dealer under warranty. Don't know if those grease monkeys know what they're doing.

My 2021 x3m40i is currently at the shop having the same issue fixed— mine started about 6 months ago with the “crunching” sound when backing out of the garage and turning the wheel near the limit in either direction… will be curious to see how things are when I get it back. As of now they claim they will have the parts within 24h but we shall see….

Definitely encourage others to get this issue looked into while still under warranty!

Finally the tension strut arrived and sent it in today. Just got my car back and saw that they replaced both sides (I complained the right side making the noise). The part numbers match the SIB - 31 10 8 854 993 and 31 10 8 854 994

Hope this really fixes the issue once and for all.

I have this EXACT noise on my G20 M340i. One direction only. I have searched far and wide for people with the same issue, but came up empty until now. Problem is both thrust arms have been replaced (and both tie rods, both upper strut mounts) and it's still there. Only thing left with a ball joint/bushing are the wishbones (i.e., lower control arms).

Well temps dropped into the 40’s last night and the noise is back. Only thing I haven’t replaced with bushings are away bar bushings and sway bar end links. One person mentioned it could be motor mounts, but I don’t think that’s what it is. I’m probably just going to live with the noise since I only hear it in the fall/winter months.

I've been dealing with this issue in my 2023 X4 M40i since day 1, where I hear the crunching sound when backing up and turning the steering wheel to the right near the limit. Initially occasional, it has become more frequent, causing concern for safety. Despite multiple visits to BMW service centers, the problem persists.

On 7/12/2023 and 10/15/2023 at BMW Steven Creek, they couldn't reproduce the sounds. On 11/3/2023 at BMW Fremont, they claimed it's normal. Finally, on 11/18/2023 at BMW Mountain View, they acknowledged the issue but insisted it wouldn't be a warranty repair.

Considering the safety aspect, should I continue trying different service centers or consider paying out of pocket for the replacements? Any advice on rewiring this situation would be greatly appreciated!

Have they replaced anything up to this point? At least in my experience, they've thrown parts at the issue (under warranty) but haven't resolved the issue. At this point, I'm living with it (4 years and counting).

Nothing replaced yet, however, I have finally found a dealership that not only acknowledged that the tension struts were both damaged but also agreed to follow SIB310223 to resolve it under warranty.

Parts are backordered, I just took my car back as they said parts won't arrive anytime soon. They will call me when is ready to install, ETA 30 to 45 days.
