I have these two, nothing leads to a 'general settings' or engine sound.

Confused.

Yours looks like I-Drive 6 not I-Drive 7. Also, it doesn't appear that you have the larger 10.25" screen either but I could be wrong.

Just picked the car up about a week and a half ago. Custom build. Not delivered with current idrive? Didn't realize US cars got different screen sizes. How do I figure this stuff out

What is your production date? Mine is October 2019. 2020s should be 388 HP.

Does your M40i have either premium package, executive package, or the standalone Live Cockpit Pro option? If not, that is likely why yours doesn't have iDrive 7 with the enhanced 10.25" control screen and the new 12.3" lcd gauge cluster.

Edit: I just looked at the pictures you posted again and it looks like you don't have the new 12.3" live cockpit pro which comes with the iDrive 7 software. If you did option either the premium package or executive package, I would take the car back to the stealership and make a fuss. If you play with the online configurator, you can see how the center control screen changes when you select either premium package, executive package, or the standalone option. You'll also notice the gauge cluster area change as well.

Didn't do either package. Didn't want live cockpit. No use for the on board nav.

So I guess that explains that.

Can I get the newer idrive with the smaller screen?

I don't really use idrive for anything so don't care much, but I did want to mess around with that engine sound setting.

Pole barn?

Do you really park it in the pole barn?!
Unfortunately yes. The alternative is in the barn, but then there is a mouse problem. The house is a late 1800's farm house out in the country. The carport is the best option.

I can't find this setting on my 2020 X3 M40d, either. It definitely has ASD and iDrive 7, though.

IiRC it's in the sound settings menu, scroll down towards the bottom.

Does anyone know of the settings in idrive 7 for the engine sound only relate to the ASD or does it do other things. I want the true exhaust sound as loud as it gets but I don't want the speaker stuff. Do I need to code the ASD off or does this new menu turn it off (mostly) or does it also affect the valves in the exhaust too?

Confused.
This is either not a 2020 or you don't have live cockpit. You have the "old" instrument panel and iDrive 6. That's why you don't have the ASD setting. You will have to code it to change it.

ASD is just artificial engine sound. It has nothing to do with your engine performance. It's just artificial engine noise coming from your speakers. The only way to affect the valves on the M40i is through coding or physically disabling them. The X3 M Competition is the only version with a factory button that allows you to manually control the valves.

Edit: You also change the valve position if you drive in Eco mode but...what's Eco mode?!?!?!

Yeah, I figured it out. Definitely a 2020, but no livecockpit, so it's idrive 6.

A couple other posters said the X3 idrive 7 is a half baked version and I'm basically not missing anything without it. I barely do anything with idrive as is.

to get the loudest noise from the exhaust you would select Sporty or whatever the most aggressive setting is. to get rid of interior noise (because on sporty it will be loudest in the interior as well) you would need to disable ASD whichever way you see fit.

It has been observed that the Engine Sound setting DOES in fact affect the exhaust valve in the muffler. I did not think it did, others informed me and I did not believe it until I got my 2020 M40i and messed around with the settings. It definitely affects the exhaust valve contrary to all previous models. It's slightly confusing because it only shows this setting as Engine Sound which we expect is ASD speaker sound... hope this helps.

Better yet, disconnect the valve on the exhaust. It will be always loud, and slightly droney at startup and certain speeds but nothing bothersome.

Not sure how it's half baked. I love it. I can only compare it to my RR Velar though. Wireless CarPlay works great. The menus are easy to navigate. No complaints on iDrive 7 from me.

It's half baked because the Personal Assistant isn't properly integrated with the rest of the vehicle electronics, as it is in the 1, 3, 8, X5, X6 and X7. It's still a very good system, though.

I definitely can't find the ASD settings in mine, though. It's not listed under Car > General Settings and neither is it listed under the Sounds menu.

I wonder if they've removed the option for the 40d.

Question for those with the engine sound setting in iDrive 7 - do you have Harman Kardon audio or not?

Perfect thanks. Engine sound to Sporty and coded ASD off.
