Wife's new '18 X3 3.0 has been in the shop longer than it's been on the road - a myriad of electrical bugs and (non)performance issues. One biggie was a passenger door that randomly unlocks and pops partially open - only with a passenger in the seat. A real safety issue and I told BMW USA about it when they called to ask how we liked our new car. They said take it back in to the dealer. We did.

It's been 3 weeks since we dropped it off and yesterday I received a call from the dealer asking if we'd be interested in doing a pure swap - our X3 for the X3 M-40 loaner they gave us - no additional cash. In addition to the M stuff, It's got a WORKING set of goodies that ours never seemed to get right and a door that stays shut.

Only concern is the initial 2199 miles it had when we got it as the loaner. Tough to tell how gentle those where, if not. Potential issue?

Maybe have them throw in some maintenance contract to make the deal?

I would do it in a heartbeat. No one did any damage to that in 2199 miles. Heck, even if they tried, they didn't.

No lease - outright purchase. But yes, I would think it a no brainer. But the wife wants a "new" car.

Hope it all works out. That would be a pretty sweet deal ending up with a 40i when you initially bought a 30i.

Uh oh...here we go. This just happened to me today with the wife driving. At about 40 mph after the doors had already locked, the passenger door unlocked and popped partially open. Scared the whatsus out of me. 3800 miles on the car.

Sounds about right. Doors would auto lock and then passenger door would suddenly unlock and pop open... at low speed. Wife kept yelling for me stop opening the door...

Well overrule her and take the M40i.

Future trade-in value alone makes it worth it.

I'd hop on the deal with other goodies like Wheel/Tire.

I assume the color combo of the loaner is acceptable.

Loaner cars are abused. Plain and simple. Caution. Once bitten, twice shy.

Its an identical car - save the body-colored trim pieces. Even has the trailer hitch.

Not to derail the thread... but, I rarely have a passenger, so, I wouldn't normally have an issue. This weekend I had a passenger and it happened. I was going around a corner at normal speed and the door unlocked and popped open.

I think the wife agrees - after some negotiations with the dealer - to make the swap. She now just needs to pull the trigger.

I think this thread should be retitled and make the front page of bimmerpost... how is everyone glossing over how big of a safety issue this is?

BMW is covering up how big of a safety issue this is with free upgrades lol. This seems isolated though. I have 3500 on my x3m40i cant recall this ever happening.

If you're in the US, and your door popped open, file a report with the NTHSA: https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/

Agreed, everyone including myself sort of glossed over that fact. Very big issue but seems to be isolated or I think we would have heard of more incidents on here.

I'd do the swap and not everyone abuses the loaners.
