At the X3M CP price point, you will be able to get into a 580 HP Jaguar FPace SVR. If JLR can finally get their reliability gremlins squared away, it will be a serious performance competitor in segment.
You do know horse power dont mean much ?? I could have 450 and you 600 and still have a faster 0 - 60 by seconds no?

Horsepower absolutely means a lot actually. But the more important metric is power-to-weight. Other things that can effect the equation are the efficiency of the drivetrain and aerodynamics.

HP on its own means nothing but in this highly competitive performance class at 4,400+ pounds, power to weight matters. The X3M / CP will not get too much lighter and for it to compete, the CP will need to bring @500HP. IMO, target should be looking towards the Stelvio QV (@4,300 pounds at 505HP) and the GLC AMG63S (@4,500 pounds at 510HP). Vehicles are compared via power, weight, 1/4 mile, 0-60 and cargo capacity posted in a nice chart provided my Max Well. From a performance perspective and all things equal, 600HP > 450HP. Let's also not forget cargo capacity because that is one of the major reasons to jump into this class.

So now that most (if not all in the not-too-far future) performance Mnfrs are climbing on board the 'SUV/SAV train', realizing the popularity and demand out there which provides nice cash flow into their firms, it seems these finer points are going to be what begins separating the pack. The Urus is already raising that bar [ https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/2...-drive-review/ ], and more yet to come with the Aston Martin Varekai, the Ferrari ...

The difficulty will be for Mnfrs to figure out the price point to which they aim. It seems many on the Forums debate price points in the $80Ks range, so unlikely it seems BMW, MB, and Audi for example will try to match Aston, Lamborghini, Ferrari and that echelon for some of these variables, opting for volume. But it would be interesting to see a 'limited run' of X3Ms with no financial constraints to see what they could produce (aside from Alpina). Bet they would sell out before they even leave the factory.

Who knows, but given the news about the M5 it looks like it may have a competition badge as well if the 2 make a trend.

BMW at vehicle launch "This is the BEST X3M yet!"
BMW 4 months later "Now THIS is the best X3M yet!"

BMW does it and so does Mercedes with their AMG "S" model designation.

It's not kind of bullshit it's straight up bullshit. Unfortunately that's the BMW business model now, prime example is the M2 lol. The best way to curtail this BS is to vote with our wallet.

BMW doesn't really care though because there are always people willing to pay for it.

And the BMW HP numbers (at least on the X5M and new M5) are known to be underrated. Their stated HP and weight should have them being slower than many of their competition but for some reason they are faster? X5M is less power and more weight than the Cayenne Turbo S, but the actual dyno results show the X5M above 600hp.

I'll wait and see...not worried about 450hp when BMW claims it. See what the Stelvio does with claimed 505hp?

Exactly. The recent Dyno by Dinan on the X3 M40i has it as one of the most underrated engines by the manufacturer that they've tested. The crank hp/trq numbers were 445/440. Presumably they kept it super artificially low in order to put more distance on paper between the M40i and the X3M. So hopefully, if they state the X3M is running at 475hp/495 torque or so...the real numbers would be in the 500+ range.
