X3 M40d coming to Europe

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I wonder if anyone with the M40i might have gone for this if it had been available at the time:

https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/globa...or-summer-2018

Quote:
With the premiere of the BMW X3 M40d (combined fuel consumption: 6.5 – 6.4 l/100 km; combined CO2emissions 172 – 169 g/km*), the number of engines available to choose from for the Sports Activity Vehicle in the premium mid-range segment increases to seven. What is more, this newcomer is now the second BMW M Performance model in the series. In the BMW X3 M40d, an in-line 6-cylinder diesel engine generates a peak output of 240 kW/326 hp and a maximum torque of 680 N m already available at 1 750 rpm thanks to multi-stage turbocharging and common rail direct injection with piezo injectors, accelerating the car from zero to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds.
I have an M40i on order but I must admit if I had known this was coming I would have been sorely tempted. Similar performance but much lower running costs.

I wonder why they didn't go for the M50D version like the X5 has with 380bhp?, the F25 X3 35D was 313hp, doesn't seem much of an M upgrade to get it to 326hp six years later

Currently like for like spec the UK 30D M Sport and M40i are very similarly priced, I wonder if one of them will eventually be replaced or prices adjusted

For me personally my miles are quite low so even if petrol costs are 50% more it's only going to be around £600 a year which in the scheme of things I thought is not worth worrying about and favoured the M40i over the 30D

Having run an SQ5 biTdi for 3 years.. I was pleased to have left the diesel dinosaur behind... outstanding performance on these cars, I’m very aware, but they just don’t compare to a petrol... for that genuine sporty feel. I’ve had a long list of diesel performance cars across the German premium brands.. so I have some solid experience and completely understand the benefit of running/fuel costs etc.

I loved my SQ5, favourite car to date... but the M40i is already taking that spot... it’s going to cost more but it’s alredy more fun and petrol will still be an acceptable fuel in a few years time..

Just my two pence worth.

I am very cautious of multistage turbo charging vs parallel. To many points of failure with designs of this nature. The B58 powered m40i is plenty quick for its displacement and is much simpler. The only reason outside of fuel costs for a diesel in this vehicle would be for towing large campers or other X3s :-)

I'm literally 50/50 on this one, on one side you have a nicer sound and better performance with m40i, but m40d will do probably half of the consumption in real world. I'm guessing they will be similarly priced?

Ok - my .02....

This car still falls short of the M57 and the upside for performance.

For the money invested into my M57 - you'll be hard pressed to find a petrol car deliver this type of power and still get 40+ mpg....

Not a chance.
They won't even give us a proper 30d (putting a 30d badge on a 20d car is not the way to do it).

Designed for Europe due to higher costs of fuel.
Same engine will be available for X4.
Not as fun as an M40i, but a good alternative.

I knew it was coming but went for the 30d. The 40d would have cost me way more given all the taxes the government put on us here in france

It'll be the same as the M40i, it's a chassis limitation, not an engine one at this point.

I don't have emissions inspections for diesel vehicles.
