Question re: Spray Painting the Muffler

Did a search for a thread I know I read recently but couldn't find it. In any case, the thread talked about spray painting the muffler. My questions are:

1. Am I correct in thinking the muffler will not exceed 2,000F?
2. Is the muffler galvanized?

I used VHT in my M2C. If you search in the M2C forum there are a few threads where guys are describing the different brands and effectiveness of each for BMW mufflers. From my eye balling of the muffler on our X4M compared to the M2C, they seem to be similar material, so what I used on my M2C should work for the X4M.

Appreciate the reply, thanks. I was looking at the VHT since it's pretty inexpensive here ~$12CAD. Thx again & I'll check out the M2C threads as well

Any header paint or bbq is perfect for this. The key is the surface prep of the muffler. Remove oils, debris, dirt. Light sand to scuff up a bit, clean again.

The prep is key, not so much the paint.

Just remembered who I was talking with about this - you! Thanks for the cleaning tip. Like any paint job, clean surface is everything. Thanks everyone

Just curious, what’s the desire to paint the muffler coming from?

I believe this trend is coming from r33_RGSport . He painted his muffler and tips gold.

Not the tips, the actual muffler. When you stand back at the rear of the vehicle, the muffler sits low enough that you can see the aluminium "color". To quote the Stones, I want to paint it black, so it's less conspicuous

I'd love to see some before and after pics.

Are you removing or covering for overspray?

Other than taking my time for thorough cleaning beforehand, I'm not anticipating this to be much of a challenge frankly. I plan on doing this whilst at the cottage in the coming weeks. I'll post something toward the end of July or thereabouts.

Morning folks. I was about to spray paint the muffler this morning (nice warm morning up at the cottage!), however upon further reflection, I've opted not to paint it. It's my belief that (down the road) I'll envariably end up having to touch it up or even repaint it should it ever start flaking. Frankly I don't need the extra work lol...so...for better or worse, my mini mod project is DOA.

Tease!

I was curious to see how this would hold up long term with road debris.

Is there another coating you can use which would be impervious to heat and road debris? Like a wrap of some sort?

Lol...yeah sorry about that! There might be something available that would stand up to heat but it's more about road debris and salt during winter months...they use TONS of it up here. My cottage is in a different province and they only sand vs salt.

Not sure about the heat resistance, but I was thinking of some sort of felt liner like they use on the wheel wells.
