Wheel bolts stuck in wheel? So weird

So I'm at Discount Tire getting upsized PS4S installed and when they removed the wheels from the car, one bolt got stuck in each of two wheels. They spin freely and seem to have room around them but won't come out of the wheel. We tried "unscrewing" them out with no luck, tapped the bolts with rubber mallet from behind, and eventually smacked the rear of the bolt quite hard to get them to pop out. Without a mallet, these were not going anywhere. The DT guys here know their shit and they've never seen that before. While we were scratching our heads they asked if I knew if that was engineered on purpose, which of course it's not.

Anyway if anyone else notices this, I wonder if it becomes a recall issue.

I just installed spacers the other day and had the same thing happen. Just tapped it out. At first I thought I bent it taking the last lug off when the wheel popped off the hub.. but it happened again on another wheel too.

My father and I was puzzled why they do it but he also said MB does this. He's a parts manager for them and seen it on their lugs too.

Same here. I bought a set like these in the past to use on high end wheels. Keeps from marring the seat when tightened and can be torqued more accurately (to an extent that really doesn't matter). I'm surprised they are used, have to be more expensive to produce.

BMW changed their lug bolts design with a spacer type. The design is supposed to allow the torque to be applied evenly among the cone surface.
Unfortunately, it is made out of Aluminum, where after putting some torque, it will get stuck.
Sometime the lug bolts itself will comes out from the spacer.
I have seen that happened a few times, where I have to hit the spacer off from the other side of the wheel.

I guess I know more than DT guys,

What type lug bolts are these ?

Top is bolt from 2018 M40i, middle is locking bolt for same vehicle and bottom is lug bolt from my new 2020 X3MC. The silver washer doesn’t appear to be removable and is not fixed in place. Was going to move the wheel locks from the M40i to the X3M but am curious about the construction and whether a similar style wheel lock is needed. Any thoughts on compatibility? During my 1200-mi service spoke with the parts guy and he had never seen a lug bolt like this. Anybody else with lug bolts like this?

It is compatible.
My X3MC came with the same lug bolts.

Thanks for the info. I checked Realoem and it shows that wheel lock part # 36132453961 is used for both the M40i and the X3M. I’ll be picking up a set. The wheel locks do not appear to have the aluminum washer. Go figure.....

I have the same wheel bolts on my 2020 X4MC, the conical free spinning sleeve was a surprise to me when I put my winters on last fall. Interesting, it must seat better on the rim or something. None of my previous BMW's have used this design.

I bet you it is not missing. It just came off from the lug bolts and stuck on the wheel.
Happened to me couple times.

That's what I immediately assumed... but not there. Strange!

That's the first, lol.
It wouldn't sit properly without the cone spacer there.

Well, glad you caught it.
That is 1 benefit of upsizing the tire.

How did the tires fit? I want to do it, but it seems tight. Would 11mm spacers make sense?

265/295 is what I installed. It fits but there is no room to spare. If you have spacers it would not hurt to use them. It seems they aren't required but again, zero extra room to spare.

Just jam it back.

The washer is pressure fit.
Only replace when it gets loose everytime you remove.

I'm running 265/295 ps4 with 12 mm spacers and zero issues. The ride is also awesome, but I added the larger rubber with the mss kit- so hard to gauge.

Bump for a related question!

So are the X3M bolts conical or ball seat? I'm going to get winter wheels that are ball seat and need to know if I need new bolts. The comparison pic above makes it almost look like ball seat but I dunno...
