Tire Pressure

I picked up the new X3 M Comp last week. Carbon Black is stunning. I have the 21" rims and was lucky to get the Michelin PS4S tires 255 front and 265 rear.

The tire pressures from the dealer seemed a bit high to me. The cold PSI recommendation on the door sill sticker is 33 PSI which is in line with the pressures I would run on PS4S on my M2. The manual recommends 38 PSI front and 44 PSI rear if you are going over 100 mph, which is not hard to do in this car, so I went with that.

After highway driving the tire PSI is 48 PSI rear and 42 PSI front which just seems high to me. And it's still fairly cold out at 45 F.

What do people recommend?

I actually have the PS4S summer tires on now. Driving gingerly in the cold temps. Thinking i'll try 36 front and 40 rear for a bit.

If that's cold PSI, it's going to contribute to center tire wear and feel harsh. 32-33 front and 35-36 rear would be my recommendation.

I'll try that out. 33 and 36 sounds reasonable.

I decreased to 33 front and 36 rear and I got a tire inflation warning from my car. Ok to drive but check tire pressures....

I raised pressures to 35 front 38 rear. Pressures after driving a while are 38 or 39 front and 41 rear. I'm baffled as to what tire pressures to run here.

I wonder if that warning is from the rapid pressure loss by deflation, and not so much that the pressures are TOO low? I can’t confirm that, however.

Many TPMS sensors have a range that they work within, or that you can set.
For instance, on my Audi, I'd put in 35psi and set them to that through the onboard display. I'd do a few laps on the track and the sensor would alert, because the tire pressure went up too high due to heat. Then I'd set them to the hot temp for the heck of it, and they'd alert once the tires came back down to temp.
Anyhow, I'd say that you should set the pressure to where you want it, then go into the vehicle status on your display and go to TPMS then hit set/reset, or something like that. And that will set the system to monitor your tires at the pressure you want it to be.
I'm sure the manual has more detail on how to set it, as does youtube.

I’d just set it how the manual recommends while running original tires. Decide if you want to hit the targets when cold or at full temp and set appropriately. Or try one way and the other see what you think for yourself. I tried some lower pressures and found that it didn’t hook up any better and the handling got a lot sloppier. I ran the pressure the car came with for most of the miles and my tires wore evenly enough for me.

I did figure out some of the settings finally. In tire pressure settings you can set the tires to all season or summer tires. And then also select whether you have 20" or 21" tires. Once I set to 21" and summer, the pressures makes more sense now and no pressure warning.

On the subject of tire pressure, is there a shortcut to display the tire pressure? I think it’s ridiculous that BMW makes you navigate through several menus just to see the current tire pressure. I’ve had cars that displayed the tire pressure on the instrument cluster via one click.

Ditto R BMW. That’s what the 1-8 programmable buttons are for (they’re not just for saving radio stations). You can program most anything on the iDrive screen.

Pull up the TPMS screen then press and hold the button you want to saved it to. If for some reason it won’t let you save…then press the BACK button then try it again.

I have TPM screen saved to button #5 (if I don’t remember…I can just hold my finger to the buttons…or run my finger across the buttons and what’s programmed into the buttons will appear).

If you have VC (voice control) you may be able to press the button on your steering wheel and just speak the screens name (like VEHICLE STATUS)…if not TIRE PRESSURE. You should be able to call out something that will at least get you on the screen to select TPM screen without having to scroll down through iDrive using the controller knob.

This is what I have programmed into my 1-8 programmable buttons:
  1. My personal list of presets (my version of CIC/NBT allows you to save up to 30 stations (AM/FM/SiriusXM) in the order of your preference so I saved my presets to this 1 button and can pull up the list in one swell swoop. You can also use voice command to bring it up to...then use the scroll button on the steering wheel to make a selection of which station you want to listen to.
  2. Climate screen for iDrive that allows you to turn on the parked car ventilation or select 1 of the 2 "timed" parked car ventilations. I do this on very hot days after running the AC and pulling into my garage where it will be dark and no air circulation. This is the perfect conditions for spawning bacteria and mold which causes that funky smell when you first turn on the AC. Drying out the AC evaporator by running the blower for up to 30 minutes after parking...reduces the conditions that spawn the bacteria.
  3. Split Screen selection that puts the nav map on the left and ENTERTAINMENT info on the right
  4. Split Screen selection that puts the nav map on the left and the OBC info on the right
  5. TPMS screen
  6. Sport Display
  7. Blank (to use for HOME when on vacation out of town to find my way back to hotel or fam/friends home)
  8. Nav destination for home (in case I'm somewhere unfamiliar and need to get home...I don't have to ask for directions back to the main local streets that are familiar (or back to the interstate or state highway if out of town/out of state).

Higher pressures (up to the manual recommendation) will give you better performance and a rougher ride.

My winters get 39F/46R. Summers I think I go 40/47. I’ll have to check as it’s getting close to putting the summer back on.

I've been running 33F 36R cold for a week or so now. When well warmed up they are around 36 to 37 front and 40 to 41 rear which seems comfortable without a noticeable loss in performance. Not that i've pushed it much. My break in service is tomorrow finally. As the weather warms up the F & R PSI will go up a bit more I suppose. So far so good.

I am curious though why the driver's side door pressure sticker says 33 PSI front and rear cold? Is that for the generic X3?

P.S. On the 2023 LCI version a tire pressure and temp gauge can be permanently added to the standard or sport screen.
