Just got the X3 last week and found out that there were a lot of rattling noises in the car while driving through rough surfaces. I was able to locate them: one from the back, one from the passenger side and the other one from the top of the driver. I was planning to let dealer figure them out but I finally decided to give a try to fix them by myself. Finally, I think I got them all.
1. Noise from the back: this rattling noise was made by the fix glass jumping on the rubber seals. I put lubricant on the seals (learn from the post here ) and the rattling was gone. 2. Noise from the passenger side: I initially thought it was coming from the seat belt but it was not. In fact, the noise was from the support arm of the wind deflector hit by the little spring under it. If you fully open the sunroof, the noise should go away. The little spring should go into the groove of the supporting arm while it is in retracted position but it was loosely aligned so it contacted the arm in the retracted position making the noise while driving. For that, I put a small piece of Velcro tape underneath the arm and use the finger to push down the arm letting the spring to force the Velcro into the groove. In this way, the spring will contact the Velcro tape in the reacted position and there is no more rattling noise. 3. Noise on top of the driver: this one is so hard to find, I was able to located today. I pulled down the cover for the windshield camera in the centre of the headliner, and exposed the base of the camera. I used my finger to push on the side wall of the base and knew that was it. The fix was easy, I put a very small piece of foam in the interface between the base of the camera and the windshield to stop the plastic side wall from moving. After put back the cover and test drive, the noise was gone! Now the car has no rattling noise. But when I go over bumps I can hear a noise from the trunk, like there is a plastic bag sitting in there. I still have no clue of that yet. If any one has an idea, please share your experience. Thanks! Update: The "plastic bag" noise is confirmed. It was from the centre arm rest of the second row. I put it down and the noise went away. There is nothing I can do about it So I am just going to leave it as it is... Now the car is almost free of rattling except for a very small rattling noise from the sunroof again. I think it is from the interface between the moving glass and the fix glass. Will try to see if I can fix it (thinking to put some Velcro tape in the back on the rubber seal on the fix glass). I think some of the issues above are not common. I checked my friend's 18 x3, he had none of the above issue. I guess I am just very unlucky...: |

Like a scratching noise coming from the overhead light cluster and if I push it with my hand it stops. I so hope this works for me also. This is FATE!! |

... and dude, I hate to add that the noise from passenger side I have too. Maybe it's something different but once I fix the overhead light cluster noise (which overrode the other one) then will give that a try. Might not be the same but thanks for a starting point ...

Only rattling I have had (owned car since Aug 2018) was coming from the rear and turned out to be the roll-up cargo area cover. I just pulled the cover out and wound it back in, and the noise went away. I had been poking and smacking everything else back there with no luck, but it should have been obvious the cargo cover was a prime suspect.

OP _ could you advise how you got the light dome fixture off? Mine has the gesture control in there too (which gets rather warm!) so I don't want to try to pry it off without knowing if there is a side to favour when doing so ;-) . SNAP!!!

I don't have the gesture control. But you don't have to take the cover off. I took it off just to see what was making the noise. You can try to put a small piece of felt or anything in between the windshield glass and the plastic (see below) to stop the plastics from moving while driving.

This is what it did... I came from Audi, Audi did a much better job on fit and finish overall. The road noise and wind noise were lower than the x3. But x3 has a better engine sound!

Nice! As I am fairly OCD I spent way too much mental energy chasing down rattles and noises in my others cars, that this time decided as a way of proving I’m not totally insane I am going to just deal with the rattles in this one and turn up the radio.

Wouldn’t it be better if the manufacturer made sure that their £55/$60k + cars didn’t rattle or squeak in the first place? Too much to ask???

I don’t doubt it. Although, I’d bet that if you were in the showroom and in the process of ordering one but told the salesperson that you had reservations about placing the order because you were concerned that it might rattle and squeak, you’d be extremely reassured that it wouldn’t and that they’d never had any such complaints.

I had and still have the rattling sunroof on both my 18 and 19 x3. The 19 was fixed for about 4 or 5 months but it has just recently started rattling again. The dealer replaced the seal and removed some fine metal shavings from I guess when the car was built. I plan to bring it in for an oil change soon and have it re-addressed.
