Yea sounds like it. Sorry bud.

Have you considered getting it repaired before it fails completely ?

Yep that is almost exactly what it sounds like... I'd trailer it to a dealer and have them fix it before it is completely kaput.

It will be best to fix it because not many people have a desire to buy an X3 let alone one with an engine that is soon to stop functioning.

I'm thinking selling it since the turbo is about to die.

Will dealer take it for trade-in?

Maybe but you would definitely get screwed because it would not pass a dealer inspection

Why not get a new turbo and get the timing chain and guides replaced? Let's be real, BMW is at fault for manufacturing a crappy car, but if money is an issue you should not have even thought about buying a BMW.

Then take it to the dealer...some Indy’s are slow for a bunch of reasons...if you don’t find a good one... supposed savings quickly disappear.

I’m lucky in that regard.

Could it be the belt tensioner?

Just been chatting to these guys...advice was to drive in sport mode and sacrifice some fuel economy. This will add thousands of miles to the longevity of the affected parts.

I don't really think it's worth the money to fix a 6 years old car.

I already spend $2800 replacing valve cover gasket and oil filter housing gasket. Performing timing chain repair and turbo replacement would most likely put total repair cost about $7000. By the time when I'm selling this car the most I'll get is $9000 if I'm lucky, that would be a dumb financial decision if I repaired it for $7000 and sell it for $9000.

Why not repair for 7000 and then drive it for many more years. You aren't going to be able to buy much of a car for 7000 dollars.

That would be my call at this point.

If we keep ours...when the CPO is finished I will get the timing/oil pump sorted

Currently a 3800 CAD hit...+Tax

could you describe what was happening with the car to have to replace the valve cover and oil filter housing? My mechanic thinks the entire housings should be replaced due to some weeping, not just the gaskets.

It was having drive train malfunction when over 40 mph but car still drives fine, dealer diagnose it to be a valve cover gasket leak they said oil filter housing is leaking badly and suggest me to replace the gasket, I haven't see any leaks around the oil filter housing yet.

I am having a similar issue, and I think it might be timing chain. Does your car have a loud cracking noise when shutting off the engine?
