3D Remote View
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com But I'm a bit confused because other times it works fine and my mirrors are always folded when I lock my car. Why would this even be an error if my side mirrors are always folded and it usually works? Anyway, it usually clears up but I was wondering if anyone else has seen this pop up. Btw, the car rendering on the Android app is not even of an X3 - but what looks like a 5 series. lol |

In the past, BMW Top Down view has always blanked out the side view if the mirrors were folded or if a door was open. I can't imagine 3D Remote View would work properly if Top Down view can't work with them folded.

Despite the top down view not working with the mirrors folded, it has been working with the 3D Remote View. The cameras appear to be mounted differently than my previous X3 and I have a slew of 3D Remote View pics that show the whole 360 while my side mirrors were folded. My side mirrors have auto folded since day one. Top down view and 3D Remote View appear to be totally separate here.

Ok, I solved the issue.
If you manually fold your mirrors closed before you lock your doors, the 3D Remote View will give you am error saying that your mirrors are folded and it couldn't render it properly resulting in a picture that shows only the front and back shots. If you go into Galley details, you will see the two side photos it took and that it is a little skewed to the back and it wasn't able to stitch the shots together. However, if you set your car to auto fold your mirrors when you lock the car, 3D Remote View will work perfectly and if you look at the Gallery details you will see that the side shots taken are a little more side centered. This is baffling. Why is there a difference in the shots taken with the side mirrors depending on when you fold them in manually or automatically? It makes me think that the cameras in the side mirrors themselves move independently of the mirrors depending on how they are folded. Someone else try this.. Look at the side shots made when you manually fold them vs automatically folding them. The difference in shots affect whether or not the 360 rendering could be made. Theoretically, there should be no difference whether you manually fold them or automatically fold them. Hmmm... |

It’s possible that when the car is in control it goes through a process that includes taking photos as it’s locking and folding and just uses those, something it doesn’t do if you just randomly fold them.
It may also unfold on its own to take a photo of it’s on auto but not when it is on manual. Either way I imagine it just boils down to software and whether or not it follows a process that allows it to do the 360 view based on manual or auto fold. |

Well I'll be damned. I was really curious about this and did it while standing next to the car and this is precisely what happens. I had no idea the mirrors fold out to take the pictures and like you said, when you manually fold them, it won't fold it out. Thanks for clearing that up! |

Is the manual available to download somewhere? I had a hell of a time on my test drive last night. The iDrive wasn’t as intuitive for me as I thought it would be for what I’d think would be simple menu navigation.
I have to say though that 10” nav screen blew my socks off. Especially essentially going from earth orbit down to intimate nav view in a half a turn of the iDrive wheel! |

The only thing that still bugs me in our 2015 X3 is that the wheel direction for zooming in on the map is the opposite of what I intuitively expect. I like that there are a few (but not an overwhelming number) shortcut buttons by the iDrive wheel. I find it easy to operate without looking down. |

Ha, same here. Four years in and I still *always* turn it the wrong way first.

Haha, same here - I almost never turned it the right way for years... however - I'm wondering if they "fixed" that in the 2018 X3... I don't seem to be complaining in my head about it when I'm driving. I'll have to check next time.

You would think that it is a software setting that could be coded. Maybe the Brits or Germans have a different instinctive control to move left to zoom in.

For those who have not messed around with the BMW Connected Drive 3D View feature or were wondering what it looked like. Here you go.
You can view your vehicle from any angle except from underneath by swiping. You can take pictures. Yes, you can read the plates of the cars around yours. I wish it was the correct model and color.

Yes. Post #14 are photos taken of my S8+. There is no setting other than entering your vehicle via the website and app.

Try reinstalling the app and adding the vehicle from scratch. Do you guys have multiple BMWs or just the M40i. That may be the reason why...just guessing.

Interesting you bring this up as my wife has been having a problem with this. I sent her the link today but she didn't have time to look at it yet at work. She indicates she has auto-close when it is locked so not sure we have the same issue. She has uninstalled and reinstalled the app three or four times since we brought her home, but we'll look at it more closely this weekend.

Thanks. Not sure why I didn't think of this . I do control 2 BMWs from the app, but I just reinstalled it and it now shows an X3.
