X3 M40i Tire Set Up Experience
I just purchased my first BMW '24 X3 M40i. I optioned in the 20" wheels which came with summer RFTs. These tires will not work in the winter months here in the Midwest. I am wondering if anyone could share what they have done for a tire set up to get through winter months and still have the ability to enjoy the summer months. Did you just replace the OEM tires with All Season tires or did you go with a whole separate winter set of wheels/tires? If you went with a separate set, what was your set up like?

Ditched stock tires and went with Conti DWS06 Plus year round.

A dedicated winter tire would be ideal, but either tire is more than capable in snow. |

Pilot Sport will get you through Midwest winter and still gives you plenty of grip to enjoy summer drive!

I have staggered 20in Pirelli Sottizero RFT. A few days ago drove Austrian Alps ski resort with 20cm snow on the road. I feared this setup and car on snow since it was my first season ownin it....but i was amazed how the car behaves. Its almost as the road was dry! I also had to park on steep hill and manouver between tight trees and other cars but the car didnt slip an inch and never lost traction. Its a M40i with sport diff. And also this Pirellis are great on dry and at speeds around 200kmh. The only thing im affraid is the wear, since they cost 1400€ here in Europe.

I've been a devotee of dedicated winter tires for close to 30 years now. I bought a complete winter set of wheels, tires & TPMS sensors from Tire Rack.
245/45-20 Vredestein Wintrac Pro all around. They're fine for normal dry weather driving, although they obviously won't handle quite as well as the staggered summer tires. We had our first snowfall of the season a few days ago and I was very happy with the tires on untreated, snow-covered, hilly roads. |

I have 20" staggered summer RFT Alenza and did not go for the winter set last year as we didn't get any snow...
This year I got lucky to get 19" style 692 rims for a fraction of cost and got Pirelli Sottozero 245/50 at Tire rack and sensors from Amazon. Tested in the "deep" snow and it works well. Need winter set for my planned trip to Vermont in February. Highway handling on the dry road is quite different from summer set: ride is more comfortable, but steering is different from I used to. |

2) I bought Blizzak LM001s 245/50R19 with some random black rims for the winter. 2b) I live in Vermont so I get some pretty harsh snow and wouldn't survive without winters. I personally prefer the tires that are great for the winter and great for the summer rather than all seasons which are just meh for everything but its also more expensive that way. |
