Field Replaceable Unit.
How it's used is up to the user . It can be the ability to use an exchangeable part (unit) that doesn't require sending the whole unit (in this case the automobile) in for the replacement of the part.
Or, it can be a unit of time (defined elsewhere) that can be allocated for parts replacement.

Update: after having my car for a few weeks waiting for 3 replacement cells, my dealer advised BMW called and there's a new delay with the parts. I have my car back and a wait time of another 1-2 months until the cells and parts come in and can be replaced. My service advisor has been excellent with communications and handled a few other things with the car while it was in, but the delay on bmw's end is disappointing.

That's bad news. You've been posting about this for a while. How long has it been? Aside from your dealer handling things well, how is corporate BMW trying to ease your pain? I mean the point of buying a PHEV is running the car on batteries.

Sorry to hear you're going through that, BMW's handling of this whole situation has been nothing short of a shitshow. I'd definitely reach out to corporate to compensate you further.

Yep. I may call corporate back and express my displeasure a bit. Hopefully I didn't throw away that fancy letter they sent with the dedicated phone number a few months ago.

Just wanted to check in with my current X3e owners, any updates for anyone still awaiting the fix? For those that have received their vehicles back and fixed, how's everything working for you?

I've had mine back for about a month or so now, and it's great to be back to charging normally and driving in Sport. So far no issues after getting 6 cells replaced and not having the car for 2.5 months.

Good timing, I just got mine back after her second trip to the dealer. Three cells replaced and a software update done at no charge. Car drove well and nice to finally use the level 2 charger I bought in December. I did have one quirk that I'm going to search the boards for insight on: I was unable to answer an incoming call using CarPlay, even though I could see the call coming in there was no response when I hit the phone button on the steering wheel. Going into the mobile device menu, I saw my iPhone connected as normal, and a second device with a name very similar to my iPhone but with a few incorrect characters. Under "known devices" my wife's iPhone was listed (as normal) and a similar, second device with the same incorrect characters in the name. I was able to highlight and delete the extra device with a name similar to my wife's, but unable to delete the one similar to mine. I'll try deleting my iPhone tomorrow and re-pairing. Odd though. Hope my fellow X3e owners are well.

Hi! I took delivery on my 2021 X3 30e on Nov 4, not being aware of this recall. My car has not been recalled, but mysteriously I am having the same issue as you, which makes me think they used a bum battery, fixed it, and then shipped it to me "new."

I've also had the check engine light come on twice since I bought it, for which they've replaced furl sensors and monitor units. 1100 miles on the car to date.

No resolution from my dealer or BMW USA, but at least now I know what to ask and have an idea of what happened!

You answer the phone with the right side knurled thumb wheel. Not the phone button on the wheel.

Can't believe they're still working on these cars. Dealer said the 2020s would be back in the dealership by March (in late January), but still waiting for the call. I guess technically there's still a couple days left, but really surprised how slow they are to get these outfitted with new batteries. Maybe they've prioritized the 2021 models? Just hoping I get a call soon.

We had to threaten corporate with lemon law to get our vehicle fixed and back. I don't think we would have been as upset if BMW had put us in a long term loaner vehicle, or something comparable, but for 3 months we were driving a Chevy Malibu. BMW's handling of this recall has been pretty horrendous...

Finally took delivery of the X3e. It took almost 6 months to get it. The journey was from from ideal as you all noted and confirmed. BMWUSA, dealers definitely need some training in communications.

Man, I'm so sorry you had to deal with that. Did they at least compensate you for the months you had the rental (on top on the rental price)? Like make your monthly payments? I feel like they've completely dropped the ball on this recall process and have soured a lot of people on these PHEVs. I finally got my car two days ago after a couple months of chasing the dealer down. They never reached out to me on their own to update me...but I'm thinking maybe it's because they weren't getting updates from the factory. Just a really bad experience all around with no communications from corporate down.

Love my car so far, but the process has been stressful even for me who only put down a deposit, so I can imagine what it's been like for you to have the car and then get it taken away.

Just got mine on Saturday. Love the car, but completely agree with you. I only dealt with the dealer and not corporate, but communications were really lacking. One time when I called to get an update my advisor pretty laughed at me and basically said it'll come in when it comes in. Fingers crossed that there are no more recalls.

Can you not get the vehicles taken back ? As soon as semiconductor batteries come on stream all current battery vehicles will be virtually unsellable surely

They did. They obviously covered the rental car, plus the car payment + gas (since it wasn't a PHEV), but each month, we'd have to call them and ask for an update and get approval on another payment for as long as they had the car, and then once more at the end to cap off the "experience".

Good to know at least you go some compensation, but disappointing that you had to initiate.

Just wanted to follow up here, make sure everyone's got their 30e back and up and running?

Also wanted to ask the group, I recently got an iDrive update done on my 30e, but I've noticed that before on a full charge, I'd typically have 17-19 miles of EV range, but now I seem to cap out around 14 miles of EV range, and when driving in EV, I used to get 99.9mpg, but they lowered it to 90.0mpg. Has anyone else noticed this after the update?

My wife drives our 30e and while we avoided the battery recall, karma did bite us recently as outlined below. I've copied this before so you may have seen it.

https://www.bimmerfest.com/threads/f...#post-13584633

Her car was actually flat bedded back to the dealer last week after having another drive train malfunction error. I haven't gotten around to updating the thread yet as I don't know how much interest there is in 30e problems. We just got the car back Saturday.

To partially respond to your question (as we didn't have an iDrive update) as part of the first attempt at repair, the "EME" module was "reprogrammed". This caused two issues, one it reset the total battery miles from factory back to zero (we had about 4,300 about 46% of the total miles on the car.) The second was previously the range after a full charge on the dashboard and on the Connected App (now My BMW) was about 20-21 miles. Now, it doesn't read above 16 miles after a full charge, BUT, we get about 20-21 miles of actual battery range.

The bloom is off the 30e a little now and my wife doesn't trust it anymore. If these were normal times we'd probably be getting rid of it and write off the BMW experience as a bit of a bust. However now is a terrible time to be buying a new car. There is no inventory to speak of so we're going to ride this out and hope that the second fix is the end of the problems.

Dang, just read through that thread (I don't check Bimmerfest as much as I used to) and that's pretty rough. If there's one major con with the 30e, it's definitely been the service associated with it, both with the dealers and BMW NA. Idk if this is across all BMWs, but as a first time BMW owner, I may stick with leasing from here on out for their non-EVs, and elsewhere altogether for EVs.

Yesterday I received a notification that my 2021 30e (which I bought in June 2021) is also subject to the 20v-601 recall. I'm a bit confused why mine was not included in the first place. Maybe BMW decided to expand the recall list?

Anyhow, has anyone gone through this recall fix recently?

I have not been notified. I too have a '21 that was delivered in early July. I recently had issues with the ICE and the vehicle has been in for service on at last 3 recent occasions. I would have like to think that they would have checked it or flagged it for any recalls (thinking back on this I realize I may be a bit of an optimist.

That being said, I know you mentioned you bought it in June, but when was your vehicle built? I know in the past I have bought vehicles at a dealership that have sat for some time. Mine was built on 5/25. I've used the site and MyBMW app to check for the recall and it states that none are for my vehicle.
