For the longest time, I would hear a rattle noise from underneath / front the car when going over bumps / pot holes at speed. It drove me crazy, and got worse with time.

Took it do a dealer, the technician came out with me and heard the noise. He was baffled. We ended up replicating the noise by punching the underside tray underneath the steering column (which actually houses a speaker). As soon as he punched it, I said that's the noise.

He replaced the tray with a new one from a newly arrived X3. Turns out that had the same rattle too. The solution? Lots and lots of felt around the tray where the screws meet the plastic. Noise gone, job done, but an obvious QA issue.

Thought I'd share in case anyone else has the same issue.

Could also put felt where the actual back of the trim hooks into place.

Is like plastic rattle? I've been padding my under coin tray with shit for ages in different places to get rid of that. Assuming it's the same thing, I had the coin tray out with two screws but didn't look underneath yet. If you mean that tray is screwed in I'll have a look see.- thanks

Open the drivers side door, bend down, and punch the area underneath the steering column in different areas. You should be able replicate the rattle when driving over potholes at speed.

Take the tray out. You'll see the speaker housing. Basically line the entire tray with felt, especially around the screws. Job done.

Don’t have my M40i yet. What is the purpose of the tray?
