6 months into X3M and ...

I'm 6 months into having my 2020 X3M and I have to say its the most fun SUV ive ever owned by a mile. However, thats the issue. For the driver this car is exciting and always leaves you with a smile on your face when you decide to step on it. As for the passengers, it's quite anxiety inducing when your driving around friends and your worried that a pothole could quite literally throw one of them out the window.

In all seriousness, I think I'm really questioning whether I can keep this thing for 2+years. Value, Utility, Speed, Looks... These are all great attributes of the car but its so damn harsh. Which leads me to my question , for those of you with an X3M currently how long have you had it. Also for those of who have sold, why did you sell and how long did you own your X3M.

Thanks!

I'm hitting the one year mark. There was a brief period where I looked at X5 M50/60s but I can't do it. X3M is just an animal I'm not ready to give up yet.

A proper set of lowering springs & some Michelin PS4S tires will help out dramatically. I went with DINAN springs & their bump-stop kit. The X3 M is now a lot less bouncy & much more composed. This is a glorious machine. You simply need to fine tune it.

I just installed the same setup, and it definitely rides better now.

Not that it was harsh before, but some people seem to have a real problem with it.

Was the drop noticeable and are you happy not only with the ride but the drop? I'm so on the fence on springs, def not MSS for me but on the fence between the multiple springs out there and KW's.

I have had mine for 2 years now and still love it. Stock was fine for my roads. I have eibach springs which has made it a touch better to drive and looks and handles better.

I still can't get over the stock power, so haven't tuned it. It still puts a smile on my face and the wife loves it too!

I've had my X4MC for 2.5 years... love everything about it.
Stock suspension, BM3 S1 tune.

Here's a long thread on lowering:

Just under 4 years for me before I sold it last year. But yes, ride can be harsh at times. It's a bmw. But you can improve the ride/stiffness as others have pointed out

It's on par with h&r, it's not as slammed as mss, but it's a noticeable drop for sure.

Gives the car an oem+ look.

Seems to ride a little better, it's not as bouncy which is nice

I just picked up a 21 x4mc and I have to say as it is harsh at times, I don't care.

This thing gives me a joker smile every time I hop in and drive it. I haven't had this much fun since my M4 vert.

I want to mod it, but I also want to keep my warranty in tact, I modded my M4 and repairs got a bit pricey lol.

Enjoy it!

I'm on H&R with a 265/295 AS setup, and the ride quality has drastically improved.

My toddler loves "fast car", but we usually take the XC90 Recharge on weekends.

I was quoted 8 hours of labor from a few shops, however my friend manages a shop and hooked me up.

Install einhorn rear dif mount, jxb driveshaft carrier, dinan springs w/bump stops, and alignment was $750

I wish there were more cup kit options for these things, or more basic coilover setups.

I like to DIY when possible so installing springs and shocks together is a lot easier and faster than springs alone. KW V3 is an option but really a premium for adjustability I will fine tune once and never touch again.

The biggest complaint I get from my favorite passenger (wife) is the lack of an oh sh!t handle in the headliner. It's a deal breaker for her.....

Mine always wants me to pull-over, so she can drive and scare the ^%^* out of me, for a change

Yes, 1" all the way around on all four corners is perfect. Also the H&R tend to be & have a reputation for being a touch on the bouncy side. The DINAN springs from what I've experience don't have that issue. For me they're the perfect solution.

Honestly, I don't really give a crap about my passengers... Hahah. To be fair, 99% of the time it's my wife and a 3 and 1 year old. I have only owned it for about 5 months, and I don't really see getting rid of it anytime soon.

Found my X4M very harsh at first. Fitted Eibach pro springs and now much better with a nice 25mm drop all round. Dont even notice the harshness now to be honest.

Coming up on a year on mine and very little complaints. I'd say my ONLY real complaint is the throttle delay... other than that, it's been a very well rounded daily driver.

Coming up on 2.5 years and 25k miles. I call it the swiss army knife of M's. As others have said, tires + springs make the ride way more compliant. From snowboarding to an HPDE (at Summit Point, WV next month) to transporting furniture, what else can do it all? I'm never getting rid of this SAV...

Ride Quality Improvement

So I am two years and 25k miles in to my X4MC. Car came with 21" staggered wheels and Michelin summer tires. I thought I "had it made" with respect to ride quality.

In hindsight, it took these mods to get the ride "acceptable" for myself and my wife.
- MSS lowering springs
- 20" x 10 wheels all around (square setup)
- For tires I had used Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 tires on other Bimmers. They cost about half of the Michelins and IMHO opinion are just as good - if not better for daily driving. Tires are 275/40 all around. The extra rubber softens the harshness many people are complaining about.
- And as a bonus, I get to rotate my tires front to back when the time comes. These cars eat rear tires about 25% faster than the fronts. But when the rears are worn out you are supposed to change all four tires to keep the transfer case happy.
