Woah, really? I would have thought there would need to be a voltage level converter of some kind. Doesn't ethernet/rj45 use +-2.5v roughly? And OBD2 up to 12v signalling?

Maximum signal voltage of CANH is 4.5v and CANL is 2.25v

Simple, fast, trouble-free coding with Bimmercode on my iPhone via the Antibreak ENET cable (from Amazon) with an Ethernet adapter. (be sure to use Airplane mode). Probably a 30 second round-trip for each code update including the ECU reboots.

So much good info in this thread (yea, I read the whole thing... some of it twice) thanks in particular to CVEE for the heads up on the fast wired ENET support and lo_cheng for working out where to hack the tailgate fob button timing.

One thing that threw me initially is the Diagnostic mode can take a few seconds to kick in... Triple-press the start button and may just look like the car's ready to start and that you missed the mark, but let it sit another ~5 seconds for the chime + diagnostic message on the IP to show and you're good to go in Bimmercode.

I did lose some driver-profile stuff, but re-importing restored everything (even the 1-7 shortcut mappings) so make sure you do the Driver Profile > Export to USB first.

First round:
ASD Off (put fuse 218 back in to avoid any potential software-update hiccups)
Warnings off
ASS memory on
Adaptive mode as default
Acoustic Lock beep tone Short, at Low volume
Volume popup off
Tailgate close from fob button
Tailgate fob button press up to 20 (~4 seconds)

Tried some of the different startup animations. I dig the M, but came back to the default one... BMW 1, BMW 2, and Connected Drive 1 all seem to be the same? Rolls Royce sound pack is cute. May take another pass through if any of the X3 M graphics arrive via updates.

Cheers, looking forward to what other bits get uncovered.

This is awesome. I've been reviewing this for a few days. Great stuff.

I am VERY interested in any information on the other ECU that you can capture.

Even just pulling all the options would be helpful.

Thank you for your work!

I have some programming skills but am not a programmer. For now, I've just been pasting the German text, several lines at a time, to Google and looking at the results. Obviously, not an ideal process. I am in the process of capturing the codeable items and comments for the other ECUs in my car. DKOMBI is probably next.

Thank you.

Needs an FSC code or emulator. As ever, Simon at Bavarian Coding can help you with that.

I use the enet cable and it works fine when you shut off WiFi, Bluetooth and Cellular data. Select Ethernet on the screen in settings where Bluetooth and WiFi are located. This way ONLY the enet cable is communicating with the car.

Cold startup noise delete

Don't get me wrong, I love to make godawful noise when I'm driving the thing - it just seems weird to wail so loud for the first 60 seconds after ignition when I'm just sitting in the driveway, foot off the gas. The added HP and torque with a MHD flash doesn't suck either.

But this would definitely void the warranty, correct?

Great...But where is the Beemercode backup folder on my iphone...I can't find it under the "files" app.

UPDATE: Duh. Found it. Just needed to use the "Browse" function in the app. Copied the back up file both to icloud and OneDrive

I wish we could turn off the cold start exhaust noise with Bimmercode? Does anyone know what or why they the loud exhaust for the first 60 seconds? I am wondering what BMW is trying to accomplish.

It may be possible. I am in the process of extracting the comments for the coding options in COMBI. I have seen coding options that seem to control the color of the display in COMFORT mode. I'll start experimenting after I extract all coding options.

See post #1646. Adding 9A2 did not change any codings in the body domain controller, head unit, and instrument cluster ECUs. Do you want me to run the test of the ECU? (The comparison is a manual process where I have to load each ECU separately, save in a decrypted format and compare with default codings.)

I really appreciate all of the information in this thread! I was able to successfully and easily code quite a few changes to my new X3 this weekend.

There are a couple things I'd like to be able to code, but I'm not sure if it's possible:
-Active Cruise Control Default Distance (I'd like it to be at the minimum.)
-Steering and Traffic Jam Assistant (I'd like it to default to "on" every time I start the car.)

Are either of these possible? Thanks in advance.

A follow-up on my post #1632. Attached is an Excel with extracted codeable items and corresponding comments for the KOMBI ECU, which controls the instrument panel. The comments for KOMBI are decidedly less helpful than those for the head unit. Also included are the default values for the various options in my car. I have the full digital cluster (option 6WB), so your values may differ.

Before people go overboard with the file, remember that changing the vast majority of these options will do absolutely nothing. This is because:
  1. BMW re-uses ECUs across different vehicle models. Some of the options are intended for other BMW models.
  2. Many of the options are legacy options that at some point used to do something, but then BMW changed the firmware in KOMBI and these options are now ignored.
  3. Some of these options may require particular hardware to have an effect; e.g., the full digital dash.

All of what I just said is based on my current understanding of things. I am fairly new to this (bought my first BMW late last year), and am certainly not an expert. With that said, if you find something interesting through experimentation, please post.
