Heavy vibration

So our 08 X3 has a vibration under acceleration that is getting progressively worse. It starts around 20 mph and by 70 it’s pretty much undriveable. Sometimes though when coasting it gets temporarily better.

I’ve changed the engine mounts, center carrier bearing, and guibo. I don’t think it’s a bad tire/wheel because sometimes it improves with foot off the gas. Both front axles have good rubber covers on both ends; I can’t feel any play in them; and there is not any clicking on cornering. I’ve heard speculation about coils and plugs but they are all about a year old and the engine seems to run fine with no codes showing.

I’m stumped. Any experience-based thoughts?

I had the exact same problem in 2007 X3 with 100k miles. It was the rear drive shaft.

It was a bad u joint in the rear half of the driveshaft. I spent the afternoon replacing the driveshaft; car runs great again.

PS apparently the u joints are not replaceable, so you have to replace the whole driveshaft, which isn’t a bad job. I bought one on Amazon for about $425

Same problem

I have the same problem with my 2007 model with about 90k miles on it. My repair-shop is convinced it's the transfer box, but searching online and in this forum, shaking and vibration in high speeds are not a symptom of a bad transfer box. The vibration is so violent that the headlights start going on and off and the car is effectively un-drivable. I don't have any error lights on either.
