38 psi rear

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Anyone running all season tires reduce the tire pressure in the rear to around 35 or 36? I'm wondering if running at 38psi also contributes to the bumpy ride in the rear? Im thinking BMW indicated 38psi to help with the tire wall stiffness in the rear for track use. lowering the tire pressure may help reduce some of the harshness?

38psi is pretty steep for daily driving and BMW's recommendation typically allows for a full load of weight in the rear cargo area. So if the car is never loaded up that heavy then you shouldn't see a situation where you need that much.

I stick to 36F and 33R which is a very comfortable ride and results in no uneven tire wear.

I totally agree with your comment. I don't haul anything or load up the rear at all. I do have a full load of passengers riding in the car though (my wife and 3 kids). But I'll play around with the psi and hopefully it does not trigger any low tire pressure in the rear preventing me from traveling over 75mph because "tire pressure" is not at 38psi.

after you decide on your desired pressures. you can reset the TPMS system and have it learn the new pressures.

Tried this out earlier today and I was really surprised at how much it changes the ride. It wasn’t too bad to begin with as an LCI, but now it’s a soft and supple ride with 32 PSI all around

I have mine 33/36, and the fucking idrive will not leave me alone about tire pressure, even after I reset it....super annoying to constantly have popups...

From what I've found in my experience with doing the reset it seems to re-set the temp that the system considers "cold" for inflation. So, if I set all my tires in the morning at 60 degrees and do the reset then that's the base for the temps. If it's 80 degrees then the suggested tire pressure in iDrive accounts for that 20 degree delta, and the reverse also seems to be true.

This is all observational mind you; I haven't seen any defined documentation around the behavior.

change it from summer/winter to "other" or "custom" or whatever the bottom setting is in idrive. it then only gives a warning if the pressure changes from the reseted pressure.

Well, this thread has been helpful.

I'm gonna say that this has too much nitrogen in the tires....

Actually, I thought the ride was pretty good. I'm gonna go outside in about an hour and learn how much better it is, haha.

Nitrogen, yeah... I guess I just expunged about $8 worth of that stuff.

Well...now at 33f/38r, it feels as though I'm driving on four wet sponges.

This will need some experimentin' to find what pressure is good for me.

Today I tried dropping my tyre pressures and what a difference this makes!

I set my pressures at 36 psi round (not cold as I forgot to do this first thing) and it's transformed the ride.

To me the car feels less edgey and more settled. The perfect free mod 😁
