Look of the speed limit sign

I live in the US. The speed limit sign on my all-digital instrument cluster is as shown in the attached photo. It's a tallish white rectangle with the miles shown in the middle and "mph" underneath it. I drove an G01 X3 today in which the speed limit sign included the words "Speed Limit" in the top half. My car has factory software from November 2018; the car I drove today had its software updated around July 2019. Did BMW change the look of the speed limit sign in more recent software versions? Or what explains the difference?

I guess it's country-specific.

It is region specific--the sign looks different in Europe than in the US. But both cars I am talking about are US cars. Both are X3.

I prefer the EU red-rimmed white circle. Love BimmerCode.

I think it's tied to your map region. When my x3 was in Germany it showed the circular signs.

Was iton the same road? Was it fixed speed limit or just temporarily? Either way, I don't remember seeing any words in the sign in my cluster - EU. My car was not updated since purchase in OCT 2018.

I'm in the US and they look like your post. However, I'm pretty sure a bit back someone in the US posted that they had their iDrive updated and they changed to what you described.

I'm also in the US and my X3, which I took delivery of 2 months ago, does have the words "Speed Limit" above the numbers both on my dash display and the heads-up display.

Thank you. That's what I was afraid of, that the next software update by my dealer will introduce the "Speed Limit" words (the look of which I personally absolutely hate).

I took delivery on July 29th of this year and my speed limit graphic looks identical to what you show here, no “speed limit” text anywhere.

I had the software updated to fix the random trunk opening problem. Prior to the update icon was as in your image. After the update "speed limit" text is shown on the hud and on the digital dash.

Does anyone know if there is a way to adjust when the speed turns red? Right now it changes at 1 over the speed limit. I’d like to have it 5-10 over. Means nothing if it’s always red!

Ya, there's a couple of iDrive settings iirc - one for the instrument cluster and one for HUD. I believe you can check or uncheck a setting for "Over Limit". It was one of the first things I shut off for the same reason - always red!

It's funny how we all see different things. I used to hate that big (to my eye) plain white box with just a number in it, and was jealous of the how Europeans got speed limit displays that mimiced their actual speed limit signs. So I was really happy when the US iDrive speed limit display was changed to mimic our speed limit signs. I like it much better.

True. We all see it differently. I personally dislike the real estate in the instrument cluster being used to tell me things I already know (e.g., that the white rectangle shows the speed limit). That's why BMW should give us options, not impose its own preferences on us.

But you can't change when it will become red. It's either on or off. Maybe coding, but I didn't swap anyone mentioning it

I took mine in for an update and when it came out "Speed Limit" was now appearing. So yeah it's a software thing.
