INPUT/HELP REQUESTED: Unidentified Noise on 2018 X3's - NOT related to Wind or Tires
Ragnarkov
My alignment shows no sign of being off. Tracks as expected, and additionally no steering wheel vibration from tires not being balanced correctly. Thanks for your insight thoughts. |

However, it it is true, and I am a witness to it, many BMW dealers do not do proper alignments. This isn't necessarily related to the design of their suspensions but because BMW's alignment specs for alignment require the cars be weighted (approx 450 pounds) to lower the ride-height first, which changes the angles (front and rear camber and toe. In lieu of adding weights, BMW dealers also have the option to avoid using these weights by using BMW specific software that compensates different target specs for the non weighted vehicle. Some dealers do neither of these correctly and/or believe none of it is necessary. The main purpose I understand for BMW publishing specs for a specific ride height is due to the fact, when BMW's increase speed they are aerodynamically pushed further down toward the road surface. |

Okay so I think I hear what you are referring to. It almost sounds like wind noise. Mine can only really be heard at 40+ miles per hour. At first it sounded like passenger rear, sometimes I hear it on the drivers side. Very strange, hard to describe, and can't really hear it if I am not constantly looking for it.
If it is in everyone's car I would have think it is wind noise of some sort or wind passing through somewhere. My wife can't even hear it.' I took back to the dealer they told me this is what the G01 sounds like, normal road/ wind noise. Could it just be engine noise? I've had mine since last friday noticed this on day two. I don't think its anything to take the car back for. I think someone said their 428i has the same noise, leads me to believe its has to be a similar part creating the noise? Quick18 - Thanks for your reply. We (the folks hearing "the noise" are not looking for any leaks as we don't believe this is a wind noise per se. But, I was curious if you have Adaptive Suspension or not. Seems people without AS possibly are having better luck...but its not conclusive...yet. Also, what is the production date stamped on the door tag? Thanks!

After I drive around in my M3 ZCP, and then drive our M40i, the X3 sounds quit and nothing atypical for a BMW.

As another data point, I have Adaptive Suspension and not the noise you describe.

Hi all, my X3 M40i was built in March 2018.
20" Pirelli run-flats, summer tires. Dynamic suspension HK audio And other probably non-relevant options. Some observations: 1. It's most noticeable in the driver's seat, less bothersome in front passenger's seat, and even less so in the rear seats. 2. My wife can't hear it, in any seating position. This would suggest that the noise is possibly there in all the M40i cars, just that some of us are more sensitive to this sound frequency. This is definitely possible from a human physiology perspective. I have not tried to put it in neutral to see if it could be a gear issue. Has anyone done this? |

Yes I have adaptive suspension. Production date is 3/6/18. I picked it up at the BMWPC on 3/23/18. I'll admit that I did not expect it to be relatively quiet; however, it has been surprisingly so. Maybe I just got lucky. |

I have tried putting car in neutral while moving and the noise doesn't change. I've also, as I've stated above, switched the engine off completely while moving and the noise is unchanged. One trend may be playing out that units built in January may be more noticeable than some units produced in the fall or in March...but can't imagine what might be causing that. Not really enough data. |

Here is what I noticed. My noise described I assume is the same, it is present at a stop light when the auto off has the engine off as well... I'm very confused now have not heard this before. Just got back after a week long business trip. Noise present with Engine on or off. moving or not. Really throws a wrench into it. Maybe its normal noise. _edit_ Important to note that noise is sometimes on passenger side towards rear (or so it sounds) or driver side toward the rear window. Again not only present when moving but also present when auto off kicks in on a stop light and not moving. |

Can anyone record this noise. I sure hope we are talking about the same thing. I really can only notice it if I focus for it. My wife can't even hear it.
