USB interfaces - charging current

Sorry if this has been brought up before. Traveling during the holidays, and the search function in the mobile app and me are not compatible...

Anybody measured the charging current of Apple devices when connected to the USB interface in the center console?

You are talking about the single USB outlet for those without Wireless charging right? i've not done any measuring but I believe it's only 5W max. or 1A current. Translation - SLOW!

The 2.4A USB adaptors are great suggestion!

Here's another example: I use these in my car - one in front and one for the backseats - these are flush fit so looks a bit more 'integrated'

Well, with wireless charging.. looks like there are two identical USB ports, one next to the wireless charging pad, and one in the armrest.
I don't expect more than 500mA. But was hoping someone actually measured.

I've got some old cig lighter plugs with enough juice, but are considering the ones linked to Amazon here. Thanks!

Apple devices will only charge at 5W using either the USB or wireless interfaces. On the USB connector, D+ and D- are both basically at 0V, which means that Apple devices will only draw 5W. On the wireless side, I'm pretty sure that Apple hasn't released any wireless charging specs for rates above 5W, and so there's no way that BMW can support higher charge rates (besides, BMW doesn't even support the Apple charging protocol on the USB port or the crappy USB cigarette lighter adapter trinket).

If you want fast charging for Apple devices, you get a better USB adapter. I'm using the same one that MechX3M40i is using, and it's pretty good. I only now need to find the equivalent for USB C.

Yes, I was just hoping that the USB interfaces supported fast charging. And that the BMW supplies cig usb charger rayed 2.4A actually could deliver that for apple devices as well.
But yes I've heard contradictions here, and just wanted to measure..

Since iOS 11.2 it actually supports faster wireless charging, but yes the BMW pad does not support more than 5W in good conditions...

Nope, the USB ports really are 5W/1A only. The BMW USB cigarette charger trinket doesn't support Apple's charging protocol either, and so Apple devices will treat it as a 5W/1A charger also (this is also a good thing, as BMW's crappy trinket can only support 2.4A from only one port at a time -- read the instructions).

Crappy BMW adapter (5W/1A only):

Good Aukey adapter (both ports support 12W/2.4A):

BMW car USB port (5W/1A only, not surprising since the port also does data transfer):

Thanks, exactly what I was looking for. Almost already picked up a tester myself. :-)

One thing I can add here is that wired charging speed is also greatly influenced by the quality of the cable. I always buy generic replacement cables from Amazon for the cheap prices. Most of them were/are good enough, but occasionally received some that were less than desirable (even within a batch of good cables). For those whom have critical need for 'speed' (pun intended) than you might want to consider Apple brand.
