VRSF intercooler installed on N55 X3

Managed to install the updated VRSF Street HD front Mount intercooler for F30. Custom fabbed brackets (3/4 inch tubing) to accommodate the single bolt opening and slightly lower position. Not the smoothest or prettiest but they are fully functional!

I weighed the stock iC @ 9 lbs and the vrsf @ 18.4 lbs

Props & thanks to FSociety, hardparker, ThomasR

Take your time and make sure you have all the appropriate tools to complete. And a steady hand helps to with cutting metal. If you haven’t been under the car before it will look like a mess. I’d do the charge and boost pipes prior to beginning. Makes bolting up the end tanks much easier as your more familiar with the installation process.

After couple days, did some logs. It was 61 degrees F, 85% humidity and cloudy.

1st pic shows around 2,500 rpm before the 4th wot pull. IAT 79F

2nd pic is almost at redline. IAT 93F

3rd pic is cruising for about a minute after. IAT 84F

Waiting til it gets above 90F next week to see how IAT’s are then.

Thanks for the tip! I did full FTP charge pipe and boost pipe last weekend and I come from a long line of doctors so I have the steady hand covered! What tools did you use? Where did you get your 'bracket' material from?

I used a multi-tool and any hardware store with square metal tubing is the material.

Ambient temps were slightly higher with this log, curious to see how this performs vs the CTS.

What tune ?
How much boost are you pushing through ?
That will also be a big factor with IAT
More boost more heat

Post 2 or 3 logs of Wide Open Throttle (air flowing) because if you let go of pedal IAT usually are not performing as they would under throttle.
1st pic around 3500-4krpm
2nd pic around 5-5500rpm
3rd pic 6-6500 rpm

Thanks a lot for taking the time to post logs. We'll have these brackets available to order as a separate F25 option and we'll be offering a slightly larger core in the next few weeks

So my last logging/testing this intercooler.

Scorching hot summer day with heat advisory.

96F. ☀️ and 69% humidity.

IAT starting after about 30 mins of driving and stop and go traffic. IAT lingered around 118F-130F ish. It would go up and down.

First beginning log

IAT 126F 2700 rpm.

To almost redline

IAT 129F

Peak IAT 142F

Went back down to 131 about 30 seconds after WOT pull.

I just ordered my dp and intercooler, any chance the ic brackets are ready now, or is this in process?

What tune do you have? Does it automatically adjust for the fact that you now have a bigger FMIC, and up boost, etc. so you get more power?

Same with if one gets DP's too.

With my old Cobb tune for my 335, you'd pick the Stage 1 tune if you had no extra hardware, stage 1+ with a FMIC or 2 with DP's, and 2+ with both.

With a piggyback tune like JB+ or Racechip, I don't think you can do any of that, other than just upping boost (see Racechip manual below), and I don't think either one can automatically adjust for hardware?

***

What about the JB Stage 1 or JB4?

http://www.burgertuning.com/stage_1_...ce_tuners.html

http://www.burgertuning.com/N55_JB4_...BMW_tuner.html

I don't want to add hardware if the tune can't fully take advantage of it.

For Flash there is Bootmod3 and MHD, I'm personally a BM3 guy because its been in the Fxx series platform longer and is the only one that works with iPhone + Android + Laptop. MHD you need and can only use an Android device with a really old slow cable. Also, BM3 advantage is they support every ROM version of cars, MHD flashes every car to the same version (incompatible versions of softwares will be pita in the long run).

All Stage1 tunes are meant for stock cars, but BM3 there's an option to use any map and turn/on off the CEL for catless DP.
All Stage2 tunes are meant for cars with Downpipes and FMIC

Correct piggyback will not be the best because they only add boost, where the flash adjusts more parameters for better performance.
