Garage List
Collected my 40d from TRL on Saturday and drove back from Heathrow to Lancashire, M40/M6, arrived home with 47.1mpg. I was not expecting that...Obviously around town its going to be lower buts as I do >10k on the motorway, more than happy....and the amount of low down grunt is awesome

Wow that is impressive! I'm driving to Paris next month so will hopefully get similar!
Grandmother and sucking eggs etc but check if you need a Crit'air certificate if you're going into Paris itself.
Thanks for the heads up, they weren't around last time we drove to Paris!

Very good figures are available under ideal conditions. I made a trip down from the Lake District a few weeks back where I was held to a constant 50mph due to traffic and road works. 59mpg came up but I was wary of believing it !!

My experience with my M40d started from TRL as well and drove back to Cheltenham .It averaged 44mpg ...Since then has dropped down to 36.2 mpg with 'mixed'' driving...I think is quite decent for the power and the weight of the car!

My final consumption for a 2400 mile trip through France and Spain was 48.5 mpg. More than happy with that since I was getting about 42 mpg out of my old 3.0d G01.

How the hell?! I can't even get close to 500 miles from a tank!

Do you use eco pro and auto start stop? Do you have run flats?

700 miles on the clock and I’m getting 38.9. It did creep over 40 at one stage and I fully expect it to improve as the mileage grows.
Very impressed considering I don’t drive like a saint and my old F25 2.0d only returned 35.8. Driving down through France in a couple of weeks, so I’ll be very interested to see what it achieves.

Hi guys, my first post on here.
I have a M40D that does 32mpg day to day with no motorway. On a long run can get just over 40mpg.
Our other car a Ford Focus 1.5D ST line X only does 39 / 48 mpg so why worry about the fuel cost. Choose beemer every time

Exactly what I'm getting from mine, I've been a bit perplexed by others saying they get a fair bit more. Which tyres do you have?

32.7 after 2200 miles. I averaged 23 in the 340i so an almost 50% improvement

I have the 21” run flats that came with the Upgraded M40D alloys. Regarding the mpg, I don’t think it will improve as I drive it in comfort mode most of the time, although there is only 5000 miles on the clock so it might improve with a few more miles on it.

I have the 20" non run flats, so it's definitely not the tyres then! Must just be people who live near motorways.

I picked up my X3 M40D last week, have only covered 350 miles since, 110 of those were on the run home from the dealership and so far i am hugely impressed at the fuel economy, for such a large / heavy car with a large frontal area it really does slip through the air.

I achieved 45 mpg on the 110 mile run home from the dealership, up the A1 to the NE keeping with the flow. Even when having a play with the car over the weekend over 100 miles it still averaged 33mpg and seems to have settled on 38mpg for my normal day to day drives. All trip indicated so taking with a slight pinch of salt.

I am already planning our cross European trip this summer in the car, really excited to stretch its legs down through Germany to Austria as you quickly find its a bit much for UK roads, you get 2 seconds acceleration blasts as traffic volumes are just too great these days. That said i am really enjoying going with the flow, a great car!

I've got 20K miles on mine now and I average low 30s around town and about 35-36 overall. Have seen 42mpg on a long run up to Scotland driving in eco mode for part of it, but I find that mode horrendous tbh and never use it!

I came out of a couple of AMGs and was convinced I was going down the M40i route, but a back to back test convinced me that the diesel suited what I wanted from a mid size SUV far better! I think the engine is a peach and it's a genuinely impressive overall bit of kit. In a straight line especially, that torque can give 95% of other cars on a road a proper fright.

Hmm...my F25 35D did 40 on typical motorway runs. I could get to 50 if doing 50.

But motorways are 70! I have no idea what I'd get doing 50, and to be honest it's irrelevant.
